50 Years ago the Esperance Museum opened on June 20th, we photographed the same scenes today! Thank you to former Esperance Mayor Lawrence Rockwell and volunteer Beverly (Jones) Schilling. Both Bev and Larry attended the Esperance Village School now the Museum. Pictured with Larry in 1970 are Past Soc. Pres. Dorothy R. Edwards and Town Historian and Justice Archie C. Montanye. Archie originated the idea of forming the Museum after the School closed in 1968. Pictured with Bev in 1970 was Bertha Cornell. I remember going to Bertha's house to drop off baked goods from my mother for the Cobleskill Hospital Auxiliary bakesale.

Spotlight on Esperance, NY - Schoharie County is made up of 16 unique and individual towns, each with their own distinctive histories. As a way to highlight the... beauty, traditions, innovations, ingenuity and richness of those histories, we will be featuring a different Schoharie County town each week, sharing photos, useful information and more. This week, we are taking a closer look at the town of Esperance with the help of town historian Kenneth Jones and the Esperance Historical Museum! The Town of Esperance was originally a part of the Town of Schoharie. The earliest European settlement was at Kniskern’s Dorf, a land patent purchased in 1729 near the junction of the Cobleskill and Schoharie Creeks. Artifacts left behind by Native Americans go back thousands of years. These are usually found where small feeder streams flow into the Schoharie. We remember those men and women who helped win WWII 75 years ago in 1945, some women worked in the factories to replace the men who were serving in active duty. Ramona (Rockwell) Feuz also learned how to drive the Esperance Fire Truck in case they were short of a driver. Ramona was a charter member and active supporter of the Esperance Museum until her passing this year at the age of 99.

On Giving Tuesday our volunteers have been busy in a social distancing way gaining storage and workroom space by moving items to the newly donated storage shed and planting a sugar maple to replace a shade tree near the Gazebo on the Village Commons. While our fund raisers are cancelled until further notice we appreciate any financial support you can give during this difficult time.

The Esperance Village Schoolhouse closed in 1968 and in 1970 opened as the Esperance Historical Museum. Gen. North gave the land for the Villalge Commons in 1820 and he and Isaac Hall Tiffany donated a used bell bearing the date 1738 to the first village schoolhouse built in 1814. The current Schoolhouse was built in 1878.
