ETAN stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar as they once again are called on to resist military oppression. Our hearts and encouragement are with them, and ETAN activists around the world are working to get our own governments to support their rights. We applaud the resilience of the people of Myanmar and join with people across Southeast Asia, including in Timor-Leste and Indonesia, who stand in solidarity with them. #HearTheVoiceofMyanmar #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar ... #SaveMyanmar #savemyanmardemocracy See more

Today: Five West Papuan university students arrested in Jayapura simply for holding a banner and flag calling for the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner t...o visit. Indonesian President Jokowi has agreed to the visit but done nothing. These students are holding him to account. Respect to Ernesto Matuan, Malvin Yobe, Apedo Doo, Devio Tekege and Dese Dumupa who are in a police cell right now. We are watching. #PapuanLivesMatter #MakeWestPapuaSafe See more

"We sincerely hope that this case will bring attention and help people understand a horrific problem that is too often hidden or ignored, not only in Timor-Leste, but around the world. ETAN was formed 30 years ago to work together with East Timorese people to make justice and safety real for everybody in that country. ETAN will continue to monitor the case as it proceeds through court systems and society."

"Gusmao’s visit is said to have been to honour the ex-priest’s role in the struggle for independence. Yet it also has to do with the low status and lack of power of poor young females, orphans with no one to protect them, and the phenomenal combined power of the clergy and the heroes of the resistance when these patriarchal forces come together in Timor, very few can contest their will."
