This April, we are amplifying the movement to promote Autism Acceptance Month, rather than Autism Awareness Month. While identification and awareness of autism are important, the next step for family and community members is acceptance. We want all of our children to know that they are not only seen, but wholly accepted and loved for who they are. Education is a vital, though often overlooked, step towards empowering women. Increasing women’s access to education breaks the cycle of poverty by giving them the knowledge and training in skill sets needed to obtain higher-paying jobs. However, according to UN Women, it will take another 130 years to achieve gender equality at the highest positions of power with the current rate of progress. International Women’s Day is a day to continue to amplify the voices of women and reassess how we can help all reach their maximum potential. Our partner project BRAVE Rock Girl was initiated by girls who were ready to empower their fellow girls around South Africa through shared travel and educational opportunities to prevent gender-based assault in underserved communities.
