From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli, we will fight our costume battles on the land and on the sea- and sometimes, even in Connecticut! Thank you to my sister in sewing @bertinsta who can really help a brotha out! You really need people who can pull you through in a pandemic. Of course, the effervescent Bumpers Peckerling came along to make sure all of the finer details we addressed. #makingithappen #everydaywework #whatpandemic #freezethaw2 @ Eric Winterling, Inc.

What’s better than a Picasso? How about a beaded Picasso? I was so inspired by @anakuzmanic_costume ‘s design for Doña Elvira’s Masquer Gown for @lyricopera Don Giovanni that I just had to do it! For Day 30 of @redthreaded #fallforcostume and #fallforcostume2020, the topic is TEXTURE. I had the idea of asking Gene Mignola of printing the artwork onto China Silk and then asking @beadingbybri to bead them to a fare-thee-well. She did not disappoint. My favorite part of this first sample is the way Bri interpreted the hair. We had room for every kind of bead and I think we used them!

For today’s post of @redthreaded #fallforcostume and #fallforcostume2020 , the theme is UNFINISHED. This dress is getting ready for an all-expense paid trip to Japan for its fitting. It’s version in muslin was ready in April and I think we fit that sometime in May via Zoom. The muslin was returned to us, pattern corrected, marked out on the fabric on the Lower East Side by @corarlevin , sent to @jefffenderstudio in Brooklyn for hand painting, returned to Cora for remarking, t...aken to Bayside for @ellenpyne to bead, back to Cora to RE-remark and cut out, and sent to Mirka in New Jersey to assemble. Or it was assembled in the shop with the linings partially assembled in New Jersey for hand painting in Brooklyn? And all tracked by shop manager @mishmurz. After the fitting after the first of the year, the final alterations will happen and the beading will be filled in over the seams for the complete look. This is what I mean by We never really shut down. There was always something to do and an incredible collection of devoted people to make it happen. This is what costume-making during COVID looks like. See more

‘Ya know how you get an idea and you get so excited about it, you start hopping up and down? A couple of summers ago, when we used to rent a house by the beach, one of my jobs on Saturday mornings was picking up the dead balloons that would wash up on the shore. You know, when you get a flower arrangement that has Mylar balloons attached, especially in May and June around Mother’s Day and Graduation? (Or used to!) and then people release the balloons into the air thinking the...y’ll float out past Pluto? Well they don’t. They wash up on the shores and beaches or fish try to eat them. For @misterdavidzinn ‘s brilliant design of @thespongebobmusical that utilized all of the garbage that we throw into the ocean and think that it disappears, I pitched the idea of a Mylar Balloon Ruff to accent his brilliant Clownfish design. For Day 28 of #fallforcostume and #fallforcostume2020, @redthreaded ‘s theme is RECYCLE. Let’s take a minute to remember that things don’t just disappear when we throw them away. Avoid single-use plastics and tell that florist no balloons the next time you send someone flowers- unless you can use them in a costume! See more

For today’s @redthreaded , #fallforcostume and #fallforcostume2020 , HEROES or really, SHEROES - category, my favorite octogenarian, @green_jane_wood. Designer, teacher, mentor, mother, grandmother, fashion historian and most importantly, co-President of the J&E Dog-looker-afterer consortium. Whether it’s a sleeve length or a pandemic, she faces all adversity with a sturdy British, stiff-upper-lip and lives the expression ‘keep calm and carry on.’ And she’s always good for a laugh. Love you Jane!

For day 26 of @redthreaded #fallforcostume and #fallforcostume2020 , the theme is JOY. There’s always a lot of excitement around the first time everyone gets dressed on a show designed by @gbarnesdesign. After months of work, back and forth, fittings and finishing, everyone has their wig and makeup and some real joy is achieved at the outcome. We made these Gladiators for the out-of-town tryout for Kinky Boots out of ordinary household object, but on steroids, you know, the way a drag queen would do. Unfortunately they never saw the light of a Broadway Stage, but , who knew you could use an outlet cover as a belt buckle? You never know unless you try! #kinkyboots #gladiators #greggbarnes

How many scarves does it take to get a Tony Nomination? The answer is 21! For the Rose Tattoo, designer @clintramos couldn’t find the right fabric for the 1st dress for @marisatomei for the @roundaboutnyc production earlier this year. But he did find a scarf at Anthropologie that was just right! So he bought them all! It was perfect and it came with its own trim. Congratulations, Clint on your nomination. We’re rooting for you. Earlier this week I was honored to be part of a webinar hosted by @drhurlin from @dradance and @bcefa. I think I had forgotten how much I love my job and my work. I gave the Angels Circle a virtual tour of the shop and the beading room and some of the different projects that we are working on. Denise an I also reminisced about -believe it or not-some of the 19 pieces that we at EW, Inc. have designed and donated to the Fire Island Dance Festival since 2013. Later, we were jo...ined by Emmy winner @alblackstonechoreo to talk about some of the pieces d’occasion We have created together for the festival. We @costumeindustrycoalition are very fortunate and grateful as Denise and Tom Viola through Broadway Cares have contributed $40,000 to our industry’s cause. Many in our industry are suffering hardships and in danger of losing their workshops because they cannot get rent reductions or forgiveness from their landlords. Please go to our website www.costumeindustrycoalition.com and donate, if you can. For today’s topic @redthreaded, #fallforcostume and #fallforcostume2020, SPACE, let’s celebrate the spaces we work in inside or out, that have become so precious to us. #dradance See more

Today’s prompt for #fallforcostume and #fallforcostume2020, FUTURE, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, designed by Ann Roth. Suits by Giliberto. This was something that we worked on last summer and will be available in December. I was stopped on the street yesterday by a complete stranger who asked what I was doing what with Broadway shut down. I wished I had told him that I was going to vote like my future depended on it, because that is what I intend to do. @redthreaded

One of the first films I ever worked on in my newly formed company was this project for IMAX about Magellan and his discovery of the Straits of Magellan. I’m not sure the film had a name. Designed by @merrilymurraywalsh, I think in the year 1991, everything was packed up and sent down to Tierra del Feugo for shooting. This is part of my work that I define as back before I knew what I was doing. One of the reasons this costume looks enormous is because, of course, the film wasn’t going to be cast until the crew got there, and everything was going to have to be worn over a wet suit. You know, things they don’t teach you in cutting and draping school. I was 31 in this picture, looking 10. I mean... if you have anything to do with costumes or this business we call ‘show,’ and don’t have an Ann Roth story, well... how can you even live? Luckily, I have several and some of them, I can even share. For @redthreaded ‘s #fallforcostume and #fallforcostume2020 , CHANGES, we were working on this HBO production of Mildred Pierce. This gown for Evan Rachel Wood is for when she makes her opera debut. We were all but finished when Ann came in and said... Brace yourself...... I think the dress needs panniers. talk about the last thing I expected to hear! I was furious. This was the first I had heard of any of this. Don’t get huffy with me, she said, do you have any left over net we can make some hip ruffles? Luckily, the dress hadn’t been hemmed and everything was finished for the dress to be raced uptown for the days shooting. She was right. Vida was singing from Die Zaberfloute, The Queen of the Night aria and needed a little 18th century vibe. I’ve learned many things from Ann over the years from toilet repair to why sequins are better than beads, but one thing that stands out is that with film, you often have one chance to get it right and you’d better go for it even if some people get a little huffy with you. For Day 19, #fallforcostume2020, PINK Not since Elizabeth Arden or Mamie Eisenhower has someone owned this color. For day 19 of @redthreaded #fallforcostume and #fallforcostume2020 the topic is PINK. These days, no one owns this color more than Midge Maisel. Beautifully worn by @rachelbrosnahan and exquisitely designed by @dzakowska #thinkpink @maiseltv. @costumeindustrycoalition
