Layla spent most of her life on a small dairy farm that sold milk and cheese. The farm owner loved her cows and intended to do right by thembut unfortunately, as good as a farmer’s intentions may be, many aspects of dairy production are harmful to cows and calves. For example: When a cow’s milk production declines at around five years old, she's considered spent and typically sent to slaughter. Luckily, Layla’s guardian didn't want this to happen to her beloved friend and chose to retire her instead. Layla has been at our New York Sanctuary for three years now (where cows like her live well into their twenties!) and is free to spend her retirement doing what she does best: simply being a cow.
After escaping a nearby farm (and likely slaughter), Ebony cow and Ivory calf jumped the fence of a compassionate couple and never looked back. When no farmer came to claim them, the authorities told the couple that they could handle the pair as they wished. The pair came to Farm Sanctuary one year ago for a brief stay before moving on to their permanent home at gorgeous VINE Sanctuary, a member of Farm Sanctuary's Farm Animal Adoption Network. This moment they were welcomed by their new family always makes us smile.
Tutu wants you to know it's that time of year again: #AdoptATurkey with Farm Sanctuary! Save a life this Thanksgiving by symbolically adopting one of our rescued turkeys. Meet the members of the flock (like Tutu!) and adopt today: https://bit.ly/2FP3sMO
Chickens, turkeys and other birds raised for meat in the US aren’t protected by any state or federal laws. The poultry industry wields significant power, and doesn’t want to be regulated. We're suing the USDA to end this preventable cruelty:
After spending two decades being used as a breeding cow, Sweet Pea finally found peace, safety, and a grand retirement at Farm Sanctuary. We've been caring for this senior Scottish Highland since October 2018, and cherish every day we get with her!
Liz soakin' up the Autumn sunshine. Rescued from a small dairy, this sweet girl is now free to live without the pressure that comes when animals are raised for profit. She is here with us, not for us.
Born unable to walk on a farm that raised cattle for meat, little Howard’s prospects were grimbut thankfully, his special needs turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The cattle farmer relinquished sickly Howard to an animal advocate, who reached out to us to give him a permanent home. We love looking back on his journeyfrom a calf hobbling around clumsily on splints to a steer running carefree through pastures with his friends. Watch until the end to see his transformation:
'Tis the season to #AdoptATurkey with Farm Sanctuary! 46 million turkeys are killed each year for Thanksgiving alone. This year, choose compassion: Take the turkey off your plate and symbolically adopt one of our rescued spokesturkeys instead. Meet this year's fab flock and learn more:
Instead of finding new and cruel methods of raising animals for slaughterlike keeping 30,000 pigs sealed inside high-rise buildingswe as humans should be investing resources into transitioning to plant-based food systems globally.
Hi, Indigo! You may remember this little one as the calf (along with her mother, Liberty) Joaquin Phoenix helped rescue from a slaughterhouse earlier this year. Both mother and baby are thriving together at our Acton, California Sanctuary.
