Judo played a large role in the development of the Feldenkrais Method. In his book Higher Judo, first published in 1952, Moshe discusses the principles of co-or...dinated movement: "While the word co-ordination is generally a loose and vague term describing an aesthetic appreciation, it has a concrete and objective meaning to the Judoka. (He).. is not satisfied until the active phase of any throw is reduced to one simple unique movement of a point located in the lower abdomen. " (p,24) He then begins to look at this core Judo principle from his western scientific perspective: "Perhaps the most important feature of co-ordinated movement, as we teach it, is that in the correct act there is no muscle of the body which is contracted with greater intensity than the rest." (p,25) "So long as this state of contraction is present, there is no sensation of effort no matter how great the actual effort is." (p,25) If you have any interest in the roots of the Feldenkrais Method, in martial arts in general or just in what constitutes 'good' movement there are several resources below: https://www.feldenkraismethod.com//jigoro-kano-moshe-felde http://semiophysics.com/SemioPhysics_Articles_mental_6.html https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/Higher_Judo.html Image Credit: https://feldenkrais-method.org

Feldenkrais Learning Center, NYC 18.11.2020

We at the FLC are pleased to welcome our most recent faculty member, Jill Van Note GCFP, who will teach the Wednesday 7pm ATM class! Below is her introductory note. As a teacher/coach in the performing arts and personal/leadership development field for over 30 years, the essential questions are frequently the same: How can I get out of my own way? What would make this easier? When and Where is doing less - actually more? These are some of the questions that I invite you to ho...ld and explore while doing Awareness through Movement. These are the questions that I am keenly curious about and the questions that I believe nourish learning and a good life well lived. My invitation is simple: Come sense your ability and leave your unnecessary effort behind. Questions? Please email me at [email protected].
