Opening tomorrow: 'War Changes its Address and Other Border Stories', a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Brian Maguire, at Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago. On-view through February 14th, the exhibition features Maguire’s characteristically large-scale paintings, spanning depictions of Aleppo, South Sudan, and Juarez, Mexico. The urgency within his works stems from the context and histories his sources portray, bringing forth the weight that images of destruction and i...njustice impress upon our visual lexicon. What I always think of is freedom. Yet, freedom is a hard thing. Tatsuo Ikeda It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Tatsuo Ikeda (19282020). The acclaimed Japanese artist, whose career-long engagement with universal themes of conflict, nationalism, genesis, and transformation, inspired and emboldened an entire generation of Japanese artists.... Drafted as a kamikaze pilot at the age of fifteen, #Ikeda was spared by the end of WWII. Triggering a strong anti-war position, the artist became widely known for his expressive realist drawings that fused reportage and satire. With time, Ikeda's practice spanned two dimensional painting and drawing to theatrical sets and conceptual performances, exploring time, space, and the metaphysical.
