One lesson they teach you when learning to ride is to always look where you’re going. Eyes up, eyes ahead, don’t concentrate on what anyone else is doing. Litt...le did we know that they didn’t just mean in the saddle. It is so easy to look at someone else, and think they are so much better than me or I wish I could ride like them or I wish I had their horses/money/lorry/yard. It’s so easy to compare yourself to someone that you think you have so much in common with. But here’s the thing - everyone really is different. You may come from the same place, be on the same yard, be the same age, take lessons from the same trainer, or you may even be friends, but nobody’s journey is the same. You have no idea the work, grit and determination someone has put in to get somewhere. You have no idea what people have sacrificed or who has climbed from the bottom of the ladder. Everyone is different, and nobody is doing it wrong. You never know where someone has come from, or where they are heading, but one thing is for sure... taking your eyes off your race will only slow you down. Focus on what you’re doing. Focus on where you’re going. Eyes up, eyes ahead. Run your race.
