RSB boxer, "Curt the Hurt" shares his diagnosis story with us and his advice to anyone newly diagnosed. "I was diagnosed 20 years ago at the age of 49. Initiall...y I had problems trying to pet my dog and reaching up to wash my hair. The slow movement was on my left side. Rigidity - No tremor. I saw several neurologists and 2 spinal surgeons over 2 years to get to the proper diagnosis. When getting a 2nd opinion before spinal surgery on my neck, that surgeon said it was something else, and to go back to a different neurologist who finally diagnosed it as PD. I have been participating in RSB for over 2 years. I dropped the past year for a short time (due to Covid and not being as comfortable with Zoom classes). I missed the movement workout, strength building, encouragement and camaraderie of Patti (our instructor) and other RSB participants, so started again when in-person class resumed last month. What’s your advice to someone newly diagnosed with PD? Don’t despair. Learn as much as you can about PD. Build a good relationship with a neurologist and movement specialist you feel confident in. Work to keep moving and continue living your life and enjoying things that are important to you. Progress comes slowly. It’s important to have a great support group and RSB provides that. Don’t give up. Life is still good! Parkinson’s is not Our Life it is a challenge we have to deal with it as best we can, every day. We enjoy living in the country, with our animals and a garden. We have great family and friends. We love to travel. We have 3 children and 3 grandchildren (who now live in Costa Rica), and we travel to see them.
