Aromatherapy is commonly used to treat chronic and acute conditions. The focus of treatment depends on the type of oil you are using. Lavender calms the body, ginger reduces nausea, tea tree topically fights bacteria, and eucalyptus clears the sinuses. If you want to try something new with proven health benefits, jasmine may be for you. 5 benefits of jasmine oil:... - It is often used in aphrodisiacs and to increase the intimacy of relationships. - It is a mood booster, promoting feelings of positivity, activeness, and freshness. - It can make you feel more vigorous and alert, especially when infused with massage oil. - It has antimicrobial properties. - It aids skin inflammation and psoriasis when included in your skincare routine. Always be sure to check with a healthcare provider before incorporating something new into your routine, if applicable. Raise your hand if your job requires you to sit at a desk for hours each day. Even if you eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and practice other healthy habits, a desk job could be undoing all your good work! Studies link prolonged sitting with compromised metabolic health, higher risk of disease, higher inflammation, more belly fat, and shorter life span. Sadly, these risks remain regardless of our physical activity level outside of work. Worst of all, these metab...olic changes don't happen gradually, but instead swiftly, within 24 hours! This is especially frustrating news for the person working hard to manage his or her Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism condition. Thankfully, the answer is as simple as incorporating more movement while you're working. Standing while working on the computer burns more calories, engages more muscles, and enhances metabolic activity. You can also take frequent breaks to stand up, go for a short walk, or stretch. If you do choose to sit, you can still mitigate the negative effects by sitting on an exercise ball and periodically engaging in some bouncing. Australian researchers found those who took frequent breaks had lower levels of C-reactive protein, an important marker of inflammation, and smaller waists as well. Waist size, like excess belly fat, is a marker for increased risk for heart disease, Alzheimer's, and other inflammation-related disorders. So fidget, wiggle, walk, stretch, dance, stand and know that with each movement you are working towards more effectively managing your health! Contact our office for more guidance on managing autoimmune diseases or lowering the risk that comes with a sedentary lifestyle.

Have you heard of "discontinuation syndrome"? It is a term used for withdrawal symptoms experienced when weaning off anti-anxiety medications and antidepressants. The use of anxiety meds, or benzodiazepines such as Valium and Xanax, have increased by about 30 percent since 1996. Many people can taper off their antidepressants with few problems, however, many experience symptoms that can be so debilitating they can't work or function normally. These symptoms can include:... - Dizziness - Confusion - Fatigue - Flu-like symptoms - Insomnia - Nausea - Brain ""zaps and shocks"" - Hyperarousal (being overstimulated easily) In a study of 180 long-term users of antidepressants, 130 reported withdrawal symptoms coming off and about half said they felt they were addicted to them. Short term use of medication to manage anxiety and depression can provide much needed relief that allows a person to function, but it does not address the underlying cause of these conditions and comes with many dangerous side effects. It’s not always easy to alleviate or reverse depression and anxiety, but it’s frequently doable, often with astounding results when you address the root causes. Functional neurology uses a combination of neurological testing, metabolic testing, and lifestyle changes to get to the bottom of what is causing your chronic anxiety or depression. If you've been suffering and want to stop use of prescription medication safely, while also addressing the root cause, call our office to see how we can help.

Chronic sleep issues are on the rise Nearly half of adults reported that they don't get a least 7 hours of sleep a night - the bare minimum for good health! Sleep and stress both significantly impact our health and wellbeing, so it's important to manage them effectively. The more you stress, the less you sleep, and the less sleep you get the more ineffectively you can handle stressors. It is a vicious cycle that ultimately results in high levels of cortisol disrupting dai...ly processes throughout your body. The good news? It is possible to better manage stress by managing sleep and vice versa. Consider the following tips: 1. Check your mattress - the average mattress is only good for 7 years and should then be switched out. 2. Go to bed at the same time to ensure at least 7 hours of sleep (aim for 8!). 3. Practice a pre-bed ritual to signal to your body that it is time to start winding down and produce melatonin. 4. Don’t discuss or read about stressful topics before bed. 5. Watch what you drink and eat - the quality of your diet influences the quality of your sleep. Avoid excess alcohol and be sure to include plenty of protein and healthy fats to support brain health. 6. Working out every morning can prepare your body for a good night’s sleep by establishing circadian rhythm. Symptoms of sleep deprivation include brain fog, fatigue, rapid weight gain or loss, inflammation, and hormonal imbalances. Our office can help you establish and maintain healthy lifestyle habits, so you are better able to cope with stress and managing sleep. Give us a call!
