April 29, 1840: the American Baptist Anti-Slavery Convention held its first session in New York. Until then, the Baptists had maintained a strained peace by car...efully avoiding discussion of the topic of slavery. But in 1840, an American Baptist Anti-Slavery Convention brought the issue into the open. The Baptist Foreign Mission Board denied a request by the Alabama Convention that slave owners be eligible to become missionaries. Finally, a Baptist Free Mission Society was formed and refused Southern money. The southern members withdrew and formed the Southern Baptist Convention. The split was completed in 1845. See more

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Ancient of Days, we have failed to learn the lessons of our ancestors. We have failed to follow their footsteps in faith. Instead of gaining wisdom, we often repeat their folly. We tune out the teachings of old, thinking we know better, but fall into the same traps of worldly fame and success. Call out to us, O God, through the prophets of old who spoke truth to power. Call out to us, O God, through the wisdom of the sages that continues to tug at our hearts. Call out to us, O God, in the needs of our neighbors, reminding us that when we love one another, we love You best. In the name of Christ, who came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it, who came to show us how to live into Your ways, we pray. Amen. Liturgy created/adapted by Rev. Mindi Welton-Mitchell, rev-o-lution.org.

In the mid-1930s, Bonhoeffer was engaged in a fierce struggle about who speaks for German Protestants in international Ecumenical gatherings was it the "Germa...n Christian" Nazi church or the Confessing Church? Even before, he struggled with nationalist Lutherans like Paul Althaus about the nationalist complaint that international Ecumenical cooperation is not possible unless everybody respects the fundamentally nationalistic spirit which Althaus and others thought was part of God's work in Germany. Bonhoeffer summarized in position in March 1933: "The theological contrast is really so profound ... How can we understand and overcome this contrast? Only based on the insight that was so basic and so characteristic for the Reformers that the church of the gospel is always called to repentance. On the one hand, this insight is absolutely important, on the other hand precisely the church, which is entrusted with this message, must again and again affirm repentance, i.e., the church must humbly listen to the other person. ... we do not know of any church than the one founded by the word of God that is calling for repentance and for the gospel. Bonhoeffer, Berlin 193233, Bonhoeffer Werke 12, pp. 262f. (trans. A.M.). Picture: Bonhoeffer at an ecumenical meeting in Fano, Denmark.

Prayer of Brokenness/Confession Holy One, we confess that we have failed to remember Your covenant with us. We turn from Your ways to the ways of this world we created, seeking selfish gain. We forget to love our neighbors and simply tolerate them, if that. We complain and quarrel and are bitter. We at times fail to believe that You are still at work in our world. Forgive us for our faithlessness. Forgive us for not trusting in You. Forgive us for not living into Your ways of love, and loving our neighbors as ourselves. Call us back into repentance, into Your way, Your truth, and Your life for us, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
