It’s hard to explain the feeling of being on a river in winter. Even familiar spots feel remote. The quiet that surrounds you feels heavy and oppressive. Even the air around you is adverse- stinging your face and hands with cold. Gone are the crowds from the fair weather days in October and November. Perhaps only a handful other like-minded souls push onward though the further you walk the fewer there’ll be and at some point it’s only you from there on out. Even the water b...ecomes an opponent, with slush and ice obscuring much of the slower and deeper spots- the most productive winter water. Ice clings to your line and blocks your guides.
