Professor John Van Niel found some interesting tracks while setting camera traps with a student. These are from a Northern Flicker, a type of woodpecker. Of all the species of woodpeckers in New York, the Flicker spends the most time feeding on the ground. They are easy to identify with the bright yellow feather shafts in their wings and tail and the large white rump patch seen as they fly away. The vast majority of birds have three toes facing forward and one facing back. Most woodpeckers have two facing forward and two back, giving them more stability when working on the side of a tree. These tracks were crisp and fresh, but also carried on for some distance. A great find on a sunny almost-spring day!
Let’s play name that bird! . They are frequent visitors at seed and suet feeders. You can also see them climbing up and down tree trunks, often in a downward zigzag pattern. .
