Thought for the Day!

I mentioned a while ago a special certification I achieved and I don't think I shared all of this. I am now a certified 'Therapeutic Pain Specialist'. I started working on this in earlier 2020 and just completed in Feb 2021. The program entails training in how to better help patients with persistent pain live better lives and feel better. Not only reducing some of their pain but also living more fulfilled lives. The main pillars of the program include: Goal Setting, Sleep Hyg...iene (hmmm, nice coincidence with this week being sleep awareness week!), aerobic exercise and pain education. A great deal of evidence is available about the utility of all of these areas, but one really evolving area is Pain Education: it is proven that people that better understand what Pain really is, tend to truly not experience as much pain. I know, seems a little crazy, but its soooo true. Anyhow, we are excited to roll out the principles of Therapeutic Pain Science with all of our patients as we continue to strive to provide the best care available. Any questions? Reply to me in this post and I will get back to you. See more

Below are some tips regarding sleep. Sleep is kind of taken for granted. But if you ask around, many people, for many reasons, have difficulty with sleep. Take a look at these ideas: Set a time to go to bed. No...1 am is not an option. Lights off, TV off and computer off. One hour prior to your set bed time, start quieting the house down.... No large volumes of water prior to going to bed to avoid going to the bathroom a lot. Limit alcoholic beverages to early evening, this makes you go to the bathroom as well. Bedroom should be dark and cool. These tips seem simple enough, but for some this would be a good place to start. Yes, if you can sleep better, your experience with pain may improve as well. More to come..

Good Morning... and I hope you all slept well!! I wanted to take a moment and mention that it is National Sleep Awareness Week! You might say, OK, whats the big deal, we all sleep sometime! Well, it is a 'Big Deal'. I think many of us understand some of the concepts behind a good nights sleep. It not only allows our bodies to rest and restore, but it allows our brains to go into a mode that helps promote overall wellbeing. I recently completed a training and I am now a 'Cert...ified Therapeutic Pain Specialist' (I will share more about this soon) and one of the many ways we help manage our pain experience is restorative sleep. We discuss a topic referred to as 'Sleep Hygiene'. We work on goals and strategies to help come up with ways to get not only more sleep but better quality sleep. In fact, when we see patients in the office we routinely ask about the impact of their problem we are seeing them for on their sleep. Sleep is a 'Functional Activity', just as walking, taking a shower, getting dressed etc are. I will be shooting you some tips on 'Sleep Hygiene' this week!! See more
