Excellence through training. Today members of Flower Hill Hose Company trained on first due engine operations. Captain LoRe, LT Nadel, and LT Yorke stressed the importance of getting the first hose line into operation safely, strategically, and efficiently. When the engine gets it right everyone wins on the fire ground. #FHH #training #chiefmiller #PWFD #hoselineoperations #engine

The Chiefs office along with the Officers and members of the Fire Medic Company # 1 regret to announce the passing of 38 year active member Ex-Captain, Ex-Presi...dent and current FMCO Board member Philip Spinnato. Phil was elected into membership on December 6, 1982, becoming an EMT in 1983 and an EMT-CC in 1988. As an officer Phil served as President from 1991 to 1993 and Captain from 1988-1989 and again from 2006-2007. Since 2008 Phil has served with distinction as a member of the FMCO Board and a Trustee of the Port Washington Volunteer Firemen’s Exempts Benevolent Association. In addition to being a multi-year High Points Award winner, in 1990 Phil had the honor of being awarded Fire Medic of the Year. He loved to serve, training members new and old, participating on nearly every committee, and sharing his wisdom just when we needed it most. He led by example and demonstrated every day the meaning and virtue of selfless service. Phil's lasting legacy will be the impact he has had upon generations of FMCO members, he was loved by all, and he will surely be missed. Anyone wishing to pay their respects may do so Friday April 2nd from 3pm-8pm at the Fire Medic Company located at 65 Harbor Road. PWFD services will be conducted at 8pm. With the possibility of a significant snow storm starting Sunday night into Monday and continuing into Tuesday evening the chance of 12 is possible. The PWFD r...eminds residents to clear snow from fire hydrants and from your home heating vents. Time is of the essence when there is a fire. A covered or frozen fire hydrant could mean life or death! Blocked heating vents could cause a blockage and cause carbon monoxide to build up in your home. There is also a chance of high winds which could cause power outages. If you experience a loss of power and utilize a generator, please be sure that the generator remains outside and away from any windows that could cause CO to enter your home. Do NOT refuel a generator that is running. Always shut it of prior to adding fuel.

Need a last minute New Years Resolution? Make volunteering and giving back to the community your New Years Resolution. JOIN THE PWFD! Why volunteer? Everyone h...as a different reason for why they volunteer. Many are looking for a way to give back to their community, others may be looking to add excitement to their lives. Still others may be searching for the camaraderie that the fire service is famous for. Whatever your motivation you will find it and much more as a member of the PWFD. Are there any benefits? Yes! While PWFD members are not paid there are many tangible rewards for serving. * 10% Property Tax Exemption (Save $863/year, Nassau County Average*) * Pension through LOSAP (up to $800/month) * Firefighter Tuition Assistance Program for College (up to $1,995 per semester**) * Free training (Firefighter 1 / EMT-B) * Free gym usage * Free annual physical * Free life insurance * Free turnout gear and Class-A uniform Whats expected of me? As a new member you’ll be expected to make a certain number of work and fire/EMS points. You gain points every time you attend a weekly work-night or go to a fire/EMS call. The required number of points varies averages out to a 4-5 hour of commitment per week. After a two year probationary period the point requirements are relaxed. In addition to attending work-nights and going to emergencies you’ll need to complete your required firefighter or EMS training. Whats the required training? As a volunteer with the PWFD your training is completely free. Many members go on to serve as professional firefighters or EMTs with the training provided by the PWFD. Firefighters must complete both the primaries and essentials of firefighting courses given by the Nassau County Fire Service Academy. The training is offered every summer one night a week for twelve weeks or in a two week combo course. EMTs must complete the EMT-B course provided by the Nassau County VEEB. The course meets two nights a week for six-months. After completing the course PWFD members will have the opportunity to take the New York State EMT-B exam. Ready to Volunteer? Yesterday, Congressman Suozzi met with members of several volunteer fire departments that He had helped secure nearly $850,000 collectively in funding through F...EMA’s Assistance for Firefighters Grant Program (AFGP). These awards will enhance firefighter safety and improve emergency services to our communities. The Port Washington Fire Department received an AFGP grant of $288,000 for 50 portable radios, one of the most important tools in a firefighter’s arsenal. Providing a dependable portable radio to each crew member entering a building can represent the difference between life and death for these firefighters and first responders. The department had also received a grant for $90,000 for personal protective equipment needed to keep members safe while treating patients with suspected COVID. Thank you Rep. Tom Suozzi

The volunteer members of the Port Washington Fire Department have been very busy over the past 36 hours. Since the early morning hours of Tuesday, August 4th, t...he Department has responded to over 100 emergency calls. A large majority of the calls we responded to have been trees that were downed by high winds. Unfortunately, many of the downed trees bought power lines down with them. At the height of the storm, the Department was requested to respond mutual aide to the Plandome Fire Department for a working house fire. Responding PWFD firefighters were involved in the initial attack on the private residence. The Port Washington Fire Department protected the peninsula with 80 firefighters that manned 5 Engines, 1 Ladder, 1 Rescue, 3 Ambulances and 2 Safety Vehicles. All operations were conducted under the leadership of Chief of Department, Thomas Golden. While recognizing the widespread damage to many homes in the community, and the fact that so many of our fellow Port Washington residents are without power, Chief Golden reports to the community that though there were some minor injuries, no significant injuries were reported.

Busy day for the Port Washington Fire Department... At 3:15pm the PWFD was alerted for a windsurfer in distress in Hempstead Harbor. Luckily a Good Samaritan ...on a jet ski was in the area and located the windsurfer and pulled him to the beach for evaluation. The windsurfer had no injuries and refused medical attention. At 5pm the department was alerted for a boat that was stuck on a sand bar with swimmers in distress off the coast of Halfmoon Lane in Sands Point. The swimmers were pulled from the water and were returned to their boat which had been pulled from the sand bar and they were on their way back to city island. At 6:50 the PWFD was alerted for a jet ski accident off the coast of Sands Point. The operator was unconscious in the water. TNH bay constables and New Rochelle Police were able to pull the victim from the water and transported him to North Hempstead Beach Park where FD and EMS members awaited to begin patient care. Due to the extent of his injuries a NCPD helicopter was requested. The patient was transported to a local hospital by helicopter in serious condition. See more

The Chiefs, Officers and members of the Port Washington Fire Department are pleased that we were able to bring happiness and excitement to so many of our reside...nts by assisting in parades for many different types of events during the COVID-19 quarantine! It has been a pleasure to partake in your birthday and graduation events and thank our members for their time providing apparatus for these events. With NYS, Long Island and the Nassau County all getting back to normal as we continue to enter new phases, many members have started to return to their jobs. The PWFD is also getting back to normal. We have resumed normal response procedures, and training so that we can continue to provide our residents the best service we can as we have for the last 113 years! With that said, it has become more difficult for us to continue with these special event drive-by parades. ***Unfortunately the department will no longer accept any NEW requests.*** We thank you for all your support and understanding. We remind you to Continue social distancing, wear your face mask when in a public setting and keep washing your hands frequently. We have come too far to turn around! We all wish you continuous health and happiness and look forward to continue serving the Port Washington community!
