We can't cut fresh flowers to leave at anyone's door with everything snowed covered this morning. But we're going to be hopeful and believe it's the last of the snow for this spring. Happy May Day! And we're going with happy last day of winter weather!
Sunflowers are thought to be a happy flower. Wishing you double happy today!
Wednesday What's Up at Flowers on the Hill. Let's talk dahlias. Absolutely one of our many favorites! And one of the more labor intensive flowers that we grow. We dig the tubers in the fall, clean and cure the tubers, divide the tubers, pack them in crates in vermiculite, transport them to Trina's to store them for the winter (her basement is cooler). In April we bring the tubers back to the farm, further divide them, put them back into crates in moistened peat moss and vermiculite to wake the them up We plant our dahlias out in late May, fertilize, water, and spray them. When our dahlias begin to flower in late July, we cover them with net bags to protect from bugs. We love dahlias! How about you?
It's feeling like we are getting closer to harvesting buckets of fresh cut flowers. This photo is from June 15th last season. Just 50 days until June 15, 2021! Calla lily rhizomes in the greenhouse in crates. Dahlia tubers waking up in the basement. Planted sweet pea seedlings out on Saturday. Hope to plant out lisianthus and feverfew this week. We are excited! How about you?
*Free Daffodil You-Pick Today* Despite the snowy weather this week, our daffodils are still going strong! Come on by today with a vessel, water and scissors and pick away! Please pull in the driveway by the daffodils and either mask up or maintain social distance while picking. ... Hope to see you in the flowers!
Switching Wednesday posts from previous weddings to what's up at the farm now. Clearly not a u-pick daffodil day! Gotta love WNY weather. Or not! Roland is making progress on our new hoop house. Doors today if the snow stops. I'll be in the cellar waking up dahlia tubers and bumping up seedlings.
Brrr! It's 10 this morning. The good news is that this photo was taken April 15, 2020. So in just 2 short months, 9 short weeks, 62 short days, we'll have daffodils blooming!
I usually associate amaryllis with Christmas. But did you know that an amaryllis symbolizes beauty and love? Seems like the perfect Valentine's flower.
Strawflowers are hands-down one of our favorite everlasting (if not our favorite) flowers! Their colors stay vibrant when dried and they last almost forever.
Another crafting weekend. And another willow heart wreath! We think it's saying, "Would you be mine?"
Oh , how we wish we had fresh cut flowers in our gardens for Valentine's Day! But wishing can't make it so. Just look out your window. The good news is that we do have the perfect gift for that local flower lover in your life. $5 Bloom Bucks! Bloom Bucks can be used just like cash at our stand all season long. Message us for details.
