The first Ramadan this Ummah celebrated took place with the first battle threatening the very existence of the mission of Islam looming. The Muslims severely la...cked financial recourses. They were being threatened by a wealthy and politically influential enemy. The Ansar (helpers) were barely afloat themselves suffering from what the Qur’an calls Khasasa (starvation) and yet they were sponsoring and supporting our beloved prophet (May upon Him be peace) and the Muhajireen (migrants). And these were just a few of the problems facing them. This Ramadan we are deprived of somethings we have become used to. But I remind myself that those luxurious blessings were never what truly made Ramadan Ramadan. It’s legacy is one of devout worship in the face of crisis. Allah says the goal of fasting is taqwa and the goal of Ramadan is gratitude. COVID-19 or not we can’t afford to lose sight of those goals. We are at home away from public eyes. It’s a bigger test of our taqwa than usual. How will we be with ourselves and our families. And instead of complaining about how things aren’t what they used to be, let’s pass this test by thanking Allah that we are blessed to have this month. The outside circumstances will come and go. She is a Trinidadian-scholar and professor in the field of African Diasporic cosmologies and sacred ontologies in the Department of Africana Studies at Wellesley College, MA. Fitzpatrick earned her B.A. in Psychology (pre-Law) with a double-minor degree in AAAS and Visual Communications, and, subsequently, received her M.A. in AAAS at OSU. Through teaching, Fitzpatrick seeks to engender emancipatory change by presenting a non-hegemonic worldview through an African cosmological lens. She values her space in the classroom and emphasizes the pedagogical importance of teaching to enlighten and empower.
