This school year has been like no other. Thank you to our NYC teachers for rising to the occasion and bringing nutrition education to students and families during a time when health and wellness could not be stressed more. You brought a sense of normalcy to the 1.1 million students served by the New York City Department of Education when the world was anything but normal. #TeacherAppreciationWeek ( taken pre-pandemic).

Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month! To celebrate, we’ll be spending the month raising awareness about food insecurity in the #AAPI community and sharing stories from our Food Bank family. One of those stories comes from Andrew Kim, a Food Bank For New York City truck driver: AAPI Heritage month is a reminder to reflect on my culture, which can easily take a backseat to the bustle and grind of daily life. It’s an opportunity to reflect on something I...’m really proud of. For Andrew, being Korean and growing up in the U.S. meant navigating multiple identities and cultural influences. I was raised in a traditionally Asian household where my parents demanded we speak our native language. They were adamant that I learned about our culture. One of the challenges he faced was trying to be mindful of his Korean heritage while assimilating to his surroundings. Eventually, he learned that he wasn’t the only one struggling with this duality. This is a country of immigrants, a melting pot in which many of us are both fond of where we came from and fond of where we are now. Drawing distinctions based on ethnicity or weaponizing difference seems silly in the face of our many shared experiences. Aside from taking pride in his Korean-American heritage, Andrew is also proud to be a part of Food Bank’s mission against hunger, delivering fresh food to New Yorkers across the five boroughs. I get to witness the whole process from start to finish, beginning with the [food donation] pick-ups to the eventual drop to partner pantries. It’s rewarding to see live and in real time the impact that Food Bank makes toward the mission of ending food insecurity. #AAPIHeritageMonth

Today is the final day of Volunteer Appreciation Month, but the selflessness and service of our volunteers is admired every day. Thank you for helping us provide food and hope to New Yorkers in need.

We met Miguelina Jaquez at FCBC in West Harlem. She had lost her job of 15 years in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Miguelina is not alone. The pandemic has left nearly half a million New Yorkers unemployed to date and many need help for the very first time. "When you see your cabinet empty and you have nothing...and you have somewhere to go...I'm grateful..." ... Give or get food at www.foodbanknyc.org
