Bunion Basics A bunion (also known as hallux valgus or hallux abducto valgus) is often described simply as a bump on the inside of the big toe. However, this bump actually reflects changes in the bony framework of the front part of the foot. The big toe leans toward the second toe, rather than pointing straight ahead. This throws the bones out of alignment producing the bunion’s classic 'bump.'... Bunions are often a progressive deformity. They continue to worsen and often become painful, with the inability to wear shoe gear and perform activities comfortably. Symptoms usually appear at the mid to late stages, although some people never have symptoms. Genetics play a part as well. It is not the bunion that is inherited, but rather a faulty mechanical structure of the foot. Certain foot types can make a person prone to developing a bunion. 'If you are unsure if you have a genetic disposition to developing bunions, or starting to have progressive issues, please make an appointment for a consultation and x-ray evaluation,' advises Dr. David Rosenzweig, of The Advanced Footcare Center, with offices in both Rye Brook, New York and Greenwich, Connecticut. Symptoms occur most often when wearing shoes that crowd the toes, such as shoes with a tight toe box or high heels. This may explain why women are more likely to have symptoms than men. In addition, spending long periods of time on your feet can aggravate or accelerate the symptoms of bunions. A bunion might be readily apparent along with such symptoms of pain, soreness, inflammation, or even numbness. However, because bunions are progressive, they do not self-heal and will usually get worse over time. 'I definitely recommend periodic evaluation and x-rays for my patients, so that we can devise a proper treatment plan,' explains Dr. Rosenzweig. Newer techniques utilizing state-of-the-art screw fixation allow immediate weight-bearing after surgical correction. Most patients do not require casts nor crutches and are returned to their sneakers within three weeks. Physical activity is often regained by 6 weeks and normal shoe gear by 8-10 weeks. Do Kids Really Need to Visit the Podiatrist? It's never too young! There are several foot problems commonly experienced by children: flatfeet (pediatric pes planus), heel pain (calcaneal apophysitis or Sever's Disease), ingrown/infected toenails, and plantar warts (verruca plantaris). ... 'It's unfortunate if a patient of any age must visit a podiatrist because of pain or infection,' explains Dr. David Rosenzweig of The Advanced Footcare Center, with offices in both Rye Brook, New York and Greenwich, Connecticut. 'If a parent is concerned whether a child has pediatric flatfoot or a condition which may affect bone development, it's wise to take preventative measures and make an appointment for evaluation.' We've all heard of kids and teenagers experiencing 'growing pains.' But growing pains should not last more than a few days, and any concerns should be addressed by a podiatrist. Healthy feet are imperative for sports and recreational activities. As children are introduced to a particular sport and they develop physical strength and skills, proper care of the foot, toes, and ankles are necessary. Indeed, some sports and activities, including dancing, have different foot requirements and different foot care needs associated with those activities. 'Many parents do not think of the foot as an important part of a child's growth and development but it very much is,' continues Dr. Rosenzweig. 'If a parent is concerned about his or her child's foot development, I suggest evaluation of your child's foot issues.'
