The main objective of this course is to understand the relationship between language, media, and society, with a particular focus on the power dimension of language. The course will explore the role of language in articulating, maintaining, and subverting power relations in society, in terms of racial, gender, and class hierarchies. We will look at the dialectic relationship between language and society: language as a social practice both influences and is influenced by the structures and forces of contemporary social institutions.
