New York Times Art Section thanks for the mention! "A STRIKING BILLBOARD looms over the gates at the main entrance of Socrates Sculpture Park. It's not an adver...tisment but an artwork by Nona Faustine that speaks to the reckoning that - fueled by the summer protests - has led to the toppling of monuments across this country. Titled "In Praise of Famous Men No More", it's soft-focus images show the Lincoln Memorial in Washington side by side with the equestrian statue of Theodore Roosevelt outside the American Museum of Natural History in New York City (which has long been considered a symbol of colonialism and racism and is in the process of being removed)"... Congratulations to Nona Faustine and the artists involved with contemporary sculptures at the Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens! "SHADOWBOXING" featuring work by Nona Faustine and Kit White continues at FreedmanArt by appointment. (DM us or email [email protected]) Shadowboxing at FreedmanArt in New York City joins the works of photographer Nona Faustine and painter Kit White in a tete-a-tete that grapples with history, national memory, landscape, racism, and violence. Faustine and White engage with American history in their respective practices, as well as their use of the photographic image to ...share distinct perspectives on a contested American landscape, both past and present. -Excerpted from Bomb Magazine review, December 18, 2019 by Stephanie Goodalle We are pleased to extend our exhibition, Shadowboxing, which opened this past Fall, 2019. Kit White now comments: "Who would have known that under Faustine's images lay the powder keg that was about to blow, bringing with it a message that was right before everyone’s eyes, but unseen. One of Faustine's powerful photographs depicts the now doomed statue of Theodore Roosevelt that stands before the Museum of Natural History. Looking at that image now, the violation seems so obvious, but it took this moment to make us see. Faustine, however, saw it all along." Faustine's words are as powerful, as are her images that speak to the moment where we have arrived: America's skeletons tumbling out of her closet. Black dead bodies screaming for justice. - Nona Faustine

A Message from FreedmanArt: "THE HUMAN SPIRIT IS STRONGER THAN ANYTHING THAT CAN HAPPEN TO IT" - George C. Scott... As we "shelter in place", we hope for well being for ourselves, our loved ones, and those all around the world. While being safely at home, for some of us, we may also feel the extra blessing of being in the true presence of the art on our walls. Words from a decade ago: "Paintings, like poetry or music, are essential nutrients that help people sustain healthy lives. They're not recreational pleasures or sidelines. They are tools that help us grasp the diversity of the world and its history, and explore the emotional capacities with which we navigate that world. They illuminate, they humble, they nurture, they inspire. They teach us to use our eyes and to know ourselves by knowing others." - as excerpted from The New York Times, December 31, 2010, Roberta Smith
