Ms. Patricia stayed put during Hurricane Sandy to watch over her home. All night she watched the water come up from the basement and pour in through leaks in the roof. She could hear walls cracking. She was able to get funds for some repairs for some parts of her home, but an improperly patched roof meant she was still experiencing leaks eight years later, which continued to damage her walls. Today we are observing Juneteenth, a national holiday that commemorates the last day of enslavement in our country, a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. While the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, the decree did not reach or result in the freeing of enslaved people immediately. On June 19, 1865, a Union general issued President Lincoln's proclamation to one of the last communities to defy the Emancipation Proclamation, which required the abolition of enslavement. The President of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation aptly describes Juneteenth as "...a unifying holiday. It is the completion of the celebration of freedom in America."

In the weeks following the announcement of the COVID-19 pandemic, SBP - NY has worked as a liaison for local food pantries, temporary housing shelters, and hospitals. SBP - NY is happy to report that since March, we’ve facilitated the donation of 3,000 3-ply surgical masks and 2,500 n95 face masks to 4 different hospitals across Brooklyn and Queens. In addition, we have distributed another 3,000 3-ply surgical masks to 5 temporary housing shelters, and 4 food pantries. With t...he support of our incredible partners at Toyota, we sent 7,000 face shields to New York City hospitals. SBP - NY has also had the opportunity to reach out to 180 families and provide resources to more than 130 community members. This week SBP is excited to celebrate AmeriCorps week! We would like to extend a major thank you to SBP-NY’s newest team member, Alesha. Alesha is serving as a Client Services Coordinator for the next 10 months. Originally from upstate New York, Alesha decided to join AmeriCorps because she was moved to help vulnerable Sandy-impacted families in NYC make the necessary repairs to their homes. Yesterday SBP - NY said goodbye to our Client Services Coordinator, Kathleen.
