The newly formed Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Double Bass Sextet will open the Friends of Vienna’s spring season on Sunday, March 29, at 3:30 PM at the Unity Church, 1243 Delaware Ave, Buffalo. This will be a rare and unusual treat for Buffalo concert goers. The group plans an entertaining program which will combine recent light, and sometimes humorous music with more traditional selections. In the past, bass groups have largely been an afterthought, or an oddity, but re...cently there has been a rise in new repertoire for the instrument. The program will include a work by Simon Garcia, a bassist and composer from Spain known for music that is jazzy and rhythmic, employing the entire range of the bass. When the audience hears selections from composer Daryl Runswick’s ‘Suite and Lowdown’, they will recognize bits of Strauss waltzes as well as traditional American songs. The BPO double bass sextet features BPO principal double bass Daniel Pendley and associate principal Brett Shurtliffe, along with their colleagues Michael Nigrin, Edmund Gnekow, Jonathan Borden and Nicholas Jones. Tickets are available at the door, cash or check only. $14 adults, $5 students. Visit wwwfriendsofvienna.org See more
The Friends of Vienna would like to thank the Artemis Quartet for an engaging concert. We also thank composer, Caroline Mallonée, for attending. Her "Butterfly Effect" was an appealing and ethereal work.
