14-S Franklin Avenue Aerial by Suzie Alvey Photo: Franklin Avenue Aerial from the Village of Garden City Annual Report, 1947 featuring old-time stores. The photo was shot looking to the southeast. Franklin Avenue, the "Fifth Avenue of Long Island," runs from the bottom left on the north to the top right, on the south, on a diagonal. Stewart Avenue with the double rows of trees, starts at the top left and runs past the old Best and Company on the northwest corner (building wit...h pointed roof). The company was the first big name store based in New York City to venture out into Garden City. Best & Company featured clothing for men, women and children. Later, it became Frankel's, a fabric store similar to Joanne's. Now CVS is occupying the site. Further down Franklin Avenue, in the white rectangular building is Frederick Loeser's, "a favorite of the carriage trade," built in 1937 as a branch of its Brooklyn Store. It became Abraham & Straus department store in 1950, which also had its flagship in Brooklyn. Now it's divided into a multitude of businesses: TD Bank, M&T Bank, Muse Paint Bar and Revel. Tucked under the trees, across Ninth Street on Franklin Avenue from Loeser's was Franklin Simon, a women's specialty store. Now it's Plymouth Insurance. On the right hand side of the photo one can see three houses on Ninth Street. The one closest to the parking lot was demolished later to make room for more parking. Note the lack of storefronts on either side of Franklin towards the bottom left. The current building housing the current Calogero's Restaurant hadn't been built yet. A small apartment was located on Franklin, on the bottom left. 365 Stewart Avenue was already built, as well as the Carlisle House at number 364, located on Stewart at the top of the photo. The Stewart House at 366 Stewart hadn't been built yet. For old-timers, Lamston's would not be built until two years later in 1949. Much has changed downtown in the last 74 years. 14-S FranklinAerial1947 Article

Sharing the layout of St. Paul’s as you reimagine St. Paul’s preserved and adapted for the benefit of the community, all while preserving its status on the National Register. Use these maps as your guide to dream of possibility while preserving this historic structure. From the archives of Suzie Alvey.

About the event: In Episode 3, "Paint like Claude Monet" we focus on observing the impact of light on the snowscape... around us as we enter into winter. Like Monet, we'll layer on thick coats of whites and then mix the hues of the rainbow to reflect the impact of the light on the snow. Before we begin, explore Monet's snowscapes and dream about how you envision your street layered in snow including the fields at St. Paul's or even the Stratford School playground as the sun begins to set. Use your imagination and we'll supply the materials and instructions to help you depict your vision. See more

We thought you’d be interested to see Edward Durrell Stone’s magnificent modernist gem listed on the National Historic Register in 2003. Although we understand the home has undergone alteration, we believe the original design intent remains in Old Westbury. Next time you pass the former Sears building, stop to take a look at how magnificent this could be once maintained again! For more information see http://www.stevenharrisarchitects.com//a-conger-goodyear-h and let us know if you find the clue that this building is in fact a work by Edward Durrell Stone.

About the Apostle House: The Garden City Historical Society is an Apostle House, part of founder, Alexander T. Stewart's planned community, the first in the United States. The 12-room Victorian was built in 1872 as a home but was never used as a residence. In 1892 the Episcopal Diocese built St. Mary’s School next door to the home. It housed classes, boarding for faculty and had the kitchen in the basement. In 1902 when St. Mary’s expanded its facility, the house was moved to 89 Fifth Street. In 1975, the Episcopal Diocese donated the home to the newly formed Historical Society. In 1988, the building was moved to its current location at 109 Eleventh Street, thanks to the generous offer from the Village of Garden City to provide the site. The Society Museum is currently closed due to the ongoing restoration and covid-19. For updates on events, follow us on Facebook, Instagram @gardencityhistoricalsociety or at TGCHS.org.

11.28 Virtual Market featuring hand painted cashmere wraps by Barbara Arnett. Read Barbara’s story here: I worked for Abercrombie & Kent and was in charge of test marketing. On a trip to Nepal, one of our guides introduced me to a wonderful Sherpa who also had a very small cashmere business. When he told me about his nephew, who desperately needed a place to live, we offered to help. We paid for Sonam’s boarding school and all expenses for a year in Nepal. Long story ...short, 22 years later, we have paid for the boarding school education of all of our painters’ children. They have all graduated and are living wonderful lives as teachers, nurses, and charter accountants and speak perfect English. My business model has always been to create something beautiful and different from every other brand. So I have developed many, many designs (almost 100!) and we have 30 ladies working full-time painting them - with vegetable dyes - on the world’s finest cashmere. Our master artists sketch the design, our colorists mix the colors I select, and then several women begin to paint with small brushes. They paint one side first, hang it to dry, and paint the other side. The wraps are not only beautiful, they are exceptionally light and - durable! They dry clean beautifully, do NOT pill, and many of my clients still wear the ones they purchased 20 years ago. I have, as you can imagine, a number of my first creations, and they are absolutely perfect. I do the designs and colors, but ALL of the credit for these wraps goes to my fantastic painters! Join us on 11.28 to virtually shop Barbara’s one of a kind creations. See more
