This is a way of measuring the space between a tooth and the gum tissue next to it. A probe is inserted into those spaces. The probe has measurements that can reach up to 12 millimeters. Healthy gum tissue measures in the range of 1-3 millimeters. Areas of concern measure numbers of 4 or more due to plaque and bacteria causing the tissue to be inflamed and pull away from the tooth. Periodontal charting is important to help detect gum disease.
