On January 2nd, 2020, at approximately 507pm, the Mineola Volunteer Fire Department was alerted by Nassau County Fire Communications - Firecom for a House Fire... with possible people trapped. 1st Assistant Chief A. Martone Jr. was first to arrive on scene and was faced with heavy fire at the rear of the house, he then transmitted the Signal 10 (working fire). Engine 162 crew led by Engine 1 2nd LT N. Ressa stretched a line and went to the back of the house to start knocking down the fire that had spread into two vehicles in the back as well as the rear of the house. Heavy collyer mansion conditions made it difficult for Tower Ladder 168s crew led by Truck 2 Captain S. Wolf to make egress into the house and make their way to the 2nd floor. Collyer mansion houses are an extreme hazard to the firefighters as they have to make there way through with belongings stacked from the floor to the ceiling and a very tight walkway to get around the house. TL168 chauffeured by Ex-Chief S. Strauss was able to position the truck to be used in a very tight area for the roof team to position the bucket and open the roof from the bucket. First floor operations was run by Truck 2 1st Lieutenant C. Strauss, 2nd floor operations was run by Truck 2 Captain S. Wolf and 1st Assistant Chief A. Martone Jr., roof operations was run by Truck 2 2nd Lieutenant B. Corrigan, and exterior operations was run by 2nd Assistant Chief D. Magalhaes. First due line operations were led by Engine 1 2nd Lieutenant N. Ressa, Second due line led by Engine 1 Captain M. Fernandes, and third due like by Engine 1 1st Lieutenant D. Accatino. Incident Command Post was run by Chief of Department R. Connolly. Units were on scene for over two (2) hours. Mutual aide departments on scene were Garden City Fire Department, Williston Park Fire Dept, Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corp, Garden City Park Fire Department, Nassau County Police Department, East Williston Fire Department Mineola Auxiliary Police Department. Mutual aide departments standing by at our headquarters were Albertson Fire Company, Carle Place Fire Dept, Westbury Fire Department. The occupant in the house was transported to a local hospital with severe burns and is currently in critical condition. It is with a very heavy heart that Chief Michael Lavoie, City Manager Edward M. Augustus, Jr. and Mayor Petty announce the devastating loss of Lt. Jason Menard,... a member of the WFD since 2010 assigned to Ladder 5, Group 2 at McKeon Road Fire Station. Lt. Menard succumbed to his injuries battling a 4 alarm fire on Stockholm Street this morning, Wednesday, November 13. He leaves behind his wife Tina, 3 children & parents. It is an extremely difficult day for the Worcester Fire Department. Lt. Menard and his crew acted selflessly and heroically. Please keep the family of Lt. Menard, his friends and crew in your thoughts and prayers. See more

Another great one taken way too soon. Battalion Chief John Nykiel, FDNY Center for Domestic Preparedness, has passed away this morning. I am still in a state of shock, I can't properly express how much of an awesome guy he was.
