Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). On June 15, 2006 the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization... declared this day an opportunity to heighten awareness and educate communities about Elder Abuse. WEADD aims to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic, and demographic circumstances affecting elder abuse and neglect. Rockland County Office for the Aging continues to work with local partners to mitigate and combat Elder Abuse. We continue to problem solve to overcome obstacles for seniors in our community who are faced with abuse. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, risk factors for many older adults have increased as seniors have been forced to socially isolate with their abusers. There are different forms of abuse - physical, mental, emotional and financial just to name a few. Financial exploitation is the most common form of abuse and costs New York state approximately $1.5 billion dollars each year. This amount includes costs to victims, agencies and public benefit programs. RCOFA is here to help and you can too! How can you help? *If you see something, say something. *Call and check on an older adult who has been isolated. *Call the Office for the Aging at (845) 364-2110 if you become aware of an older adult who is being abused.
