What it's all about
Just because it’s Fall doesn’t mean there isn’t still great fishing to be had! Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of a Free Fishing Day tomorrow, Septembe...r 26th. This designated day coincides with National Hunting & Fishing Day, so what better opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the great natural resources our state has to offer. The requirement for a fishing license is waived during free fishing days, but all other fishing regulations still apply. See what local fishing spots await by visiting the DEC website. New York deer are currently being affected by an unusual outbreak of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD). EHD is a fatal viral disease of whitetail deer caused ...by a tiny biting fly. It cannot be contracted by humans. A deer infected with EHD may appear lame or dehydrated and have a swollen head, neck, tongue, or eyelids. Frequently, infected deer will seek out water sources and many die near a water source. To date, EHD has been confirmed in portions of Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster, and Westchester counties, and DEC has received reports of approximately 750 dead deer. Though the current outbreak appears concentrated in the lower Hudson Valley, EHD may spread to other parts of the state, until we have widespread frosts that kill the flies that transmit the virus. Reports from hunters can help DEC track the disease's potential spread. Hunters are encouraged to report any deer suspected of dying from EHD to their nearest DEC regional wildlife office: https://on.ny.gov/2K6BOtt For more information: https://on.ny.gov/36rdkHB

Attention, hunters! Now, through August 31, 2020, you can complete all the requirements to earn a NYS hunter education certificate online. DEC is also announci...ng an online bowhunter education course option, which will become available July 15th. The online course is available to anyone ages 11 and older and can be completed from a computer, tablet, or smart phone at any time. Students who complete the online course and virtual field day, and pass the final exam, will receive their hunter education certificate and can purchase a hunting license. Only those hunters ages 12 or older may purchase a license and head afield this spring. First-time hunters who want to hunt during New York’s fall hunting seasons must first earn a hunter education certificate prior to purchasing their first hunting license. DEC and NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets (DAM) confirmed that spotted lanternfly (SLF), an invasive pest from Asia, has been found in Albany and Yates ...counties. A single adult insect was discovered in a vehicle in the Capital District. In addition, a single adult insect was reported on a private Keuka Lake property in Penn Yan, Yates County. Following both reported cases, DEC and DAM immediately began extensive surveys throughout the area. This pest has the potential to severely impact our state's agricultural and tourism industries. We urge New Yorkers to report potential sightings to [email protected]
ATTENTION BOAT OWNERS! If you own a fishing boat at one of the reservoirs, please remember to store your boat above the high water line. Heavy rains over the pa...st two weeks have caused the reservoirs to refill quickly, and at least five fishing boats have drifted away because they were improperly stored. In each of those cases, DEP Police must deploy resources as if someone was in the boat. Please help us protect your property and public safety by storing these boats above the high water mark. Thanks!

Every year, tens of thousands of New York hunters enjoy the opportunity to bring home a handsome 2.5-year old or older buck, while approximately half of the ant...lered bucks taken in the state annually are 1.5-years old (yearlings). New York hunters can increase the likelihood of harvesting a 2.5-year old or older buck by simply choosing to pass up shots at young bucks. The choice is yours and your choice makes a difference! See our page on buck hunting in New York for more info: http://on.ny.gov/2eJCQwn #hunting #NYS

Spring reminder: If you come upon a fawn curled up in a field with no mother deer in sight, admire it briefly from a distance but never touch or interfere. The ...fawn is doing exactly what nature intendedstaying quiet and hidden. Whitetail deer mothers are typically within 100 yards but they keep their distance only visiting to nurse or lead their fawn to another safe location. The reason behind this behavior is so she doesn't attract predators to the fawn. By hiding them in tall grass or thick vegetation they can stay out of sight until they are stronger and thanks to their lack of scent and dappled coat, they will remain undetected by predators. If you care, leave them there. #WildlifeWednesday See more
