I know it's a wig page, but sometimes my life is so full of so many other things, I just cannot wig out for a few days, so this is the content that's at the forefront of my mind! There are ups and downs in every family...stories, issues, etc...Blended families make these things so much more complicated. But when everyone can get together to celebrate a new couple starting their life together, there's a moral of the story for the couple to learn...that if people can come toget...her to create a 6 hour event, the couple can come together and learn to work together on whatever comes their way. We wish Ruti and Yiddy so much joy, peace, happiness, and most of all, the ability to work together come what may! #WigOutWithGitel

Just like new; some #MondayMagic for you! This is an old Irenes Wigs piece but you’d never know! We colored it, thinned it and softened the layers a bit to change the look. Stay tuned for her newer, shorter, comfortable style coming up soon! #WigOutWithGitel

Falling in love Because the trends in hair are going away from layers, Irenes Wigs had some discontinued styles with a lot of layers and this is one of them! This client got a great deal on this short, layered fall and we eliminated the old layers with some strategic thinning! She is relatively short so where it falls on her body makes it look longer than it is, but it’s a great medium length fall if you’re on the shorter side and a great short fall if you’re tall AND we do have a few left in stock! The color was so amazing that the client used it as a base to color another wig of hers and because she saved so much money on this fall, she basically got the color job and a fall for the price she was expecting to pay for a new fall! #WigOutWithGitel

Stay tuned for family pictures and events this weekend and next week, from a close family member getting married this Sunday! Sorry folks, that’s all I got. My brain is fried and my kids don't even have suits yet. Wish me luck! #WigOutWithGitel

Say what?! This little hand-me-down wig started out blonde! That’s right! It was colored by Esther at Painted Strands at a time when I wasn’t available for color but it was brought in for a wash and we went for a different kind of crimp, since it was previously worn mostly straight and we wanted to try something new! #WigOutWithGitel

Price increases? COVID shortages? What exactly is going on? If you didn't join us for the live on Instagram, watch it here. We had such a great viewership, I think people really needed to hear about what's going, and I'm the one who's gonna clarify it for you, so here goes. Are covid shortages real, or just an excuse for everyone to be raising prices? Are wig prices going up, and if yes, how much? Answers to these and much more information, in this video.... Watch, and tell us what you think, tell us what rumors you've heard and whether or not I answered what you were looking to hear or if there's more that needs to be explained... #WigOutWithGitel Link to IGTV: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CJJyxI0FfHR/

Custom Creation This wig was won through the JLIC at Brooklyn College auction! The winner decided to pay extra to upgrade to a lace top and we custom ordered her natural texture so it’s a perfect match! Swipe to the last slide to see just how great she looks in it! #WigOutWithGitel

Continuing our series on wig vocabulary, I want to play grammar police today. This is something that should have been clarified years ago, from a strictly semantics perspective, but instead it was misused, abused, and plain old wrong for so long. Again, I'm gonna go way, way, wayyyyy back to explain this one and where it came from. In the 80's and 90's, most of the wig industry was selling wigs that were highly processed hair, predetermined styles, at a pretty low price poi...nt. If you look back at the trending styles back then, it fit with the demand for stiff, big hair, and it worked. So the word "custom" usually referred to higher quality hair, even if it was not custom ordered, but rather "out of the box" styles (like we discussed in our last "wig vocabulary" post). One company even went so far as to label a specific line of processed hair as "custom quality", which of you think about it, could be considered misleading. Very few stylists were knowledgeable in how to "customize" these wigs, so it wasn't even a conflict of definitions. Over the years, with changes in the industry, advance of technology and construction, the standards of construction have changed, and this specific terminology has also practically disappeared. I even credit social media, to a certain extent, for educating the customer base, and spreading knowledge to the wig-wearing public. For my own business though, I was always using the words properly, from a vocabulary standpoint, and educating and explaining the differences to my clients, so I haven't had to update myself or my usage of these terms. #WigOutWithGitel

Virtual Consultation So how DOES a virtual consultation work and how DOES a wig get made that way? This wig was a custom order. When the wig comes in, I try it on and check it against the client’s measurements and get the wig as close to finished as possible without ruining the resell-ability of the wig. Then I ship it to the client so she can try it on, and she ships it back so I can finish the product! Clients will often send me photos and I’ll draw on them to remember... what we discussed (swipe to the end for those photos!). We installed the lace, finished the highlights and did more cutting before sending it back to her. Virtual consultations do include a LOT of back and forth, video calls and conversations but this is the way to do it...plus, check out that finished product! We air dried it and photographed it to show the highlights, before blowing it out and sending it to her one last time! #WigOutWithGitel

It’s okay to be in love with a wig right?! This long, lovely custom belongs to Shira from Swaddlebee! #FunFact she can put this wig in a pony because...we made it that way! Wigs need to fit into your life, not the other way around and that’s what you get when you #WigOutWithGitel

So the biggest question about my mission to clarify wig vocabulary is simply, "where to start?" There are so many different things that people say and do that vary from one stylist to the next and so it's easy to misinterpret so much. And this is the main reason! So it's important to understand that there's no controlling agency in the wig world. Nobody to decide the use of the word "remy" or the "virginity" of the hair. Nobody to determine whether a "custom" is really cus...tomized, "out of the box," or if there was never even a box involved to begin with. No set standards for the size and texture of a wave, or even the numerical values of color numbers. In the absence of a standardized vocabulary or a control organization, all that's left is trust of the professional you're working with and the reputation of the company, which is something we're trying to fix. Because where there's consistency, there can be accountability, but I'm getting way ahead of myself. It’s my opinion that the moral of the story is to educate the public, encourage open dialogues between stylists and their clients, and raise the bar for integrity across the board. Stick around, we're gonna clarify a whole lot more, coming up! #WigOutWithGitel

#WigWednesday This is a lace front custom WITH a widow’s peak! She wanted burgundy highlights and she’s done purple highlights in the past so I knew she really wanted these but I’m very hesitant to do anything daring on a new wig. I believe experimentation should be done on older wigs so if it doesn’t come out great, it’s not as bad. But because I knew she was serious and because I knew I could do something subtle enough that I would think it’s safe and bright enough that she would love it, we came to this meeting of the minds where I came up with the formula and Ahuva did the work! She loves itttttt but she can go more daring in the future if she wants! #WigOutWithGitel

Blonde Bombshell She’s had this Irenes Wigs dolce for about a year and a half but it needed some touch ups! Blondes are sensitive to their wigs changing color because they notice it so we refreshed that to give it new life! We also trimmed the bangs a bit because when she bought this baby she was trying to break away from the big blown out side bangs she always wore in favor of a less layered look but she decided to go back to what she knows she loves and we think she looks incredible! #WigOutWithGitel

I don't even know if anyone ever uses the term "out of the box" anymore. Back in the day, stock wigs that hadn't been bought and cut yet were stored and stacked in boxes, hence the term. But gone are the little boxes, most inventory currently is stored in ziploc bags and drawers. Going even further back, many styles in cheaper quality hair were prestyled and prelayered to be worn only in a specific direction, specifically in the days before multi directional tops. But since... those became the gold standard of the wig industry, wigs were made to be bought and styled differently for each client. This also took the certainty of a style out of the shopping experience, so clients found it harder to picture a finished product. A couple of stylists thought that might need to be fixed and gave way to the next step in wig buying. Some of them invested in inventory of wigs that hadn't been cut yet, and styled them in advance to make the buying experience (and selling) easier, giving way to the term "pre-cut". This is a trend that started only 12-14 years ago. Previously, stylists weren't doing it because they didn't own their inventory. It took a lot of purchasing power to do this, and not everyone in the industry had the ability to do it. The manufacturers caught on though and did it too, because they owned their inventory and because they could. I could go on about how these changes to the industry have evolved, damaged or benefitted the industry, but we've got so many more terms to cover... #WigOutWithGitel

#FallFriday Remember when we posted this fall in the middle of an unfinished color job? I’m going to admit something you don't often hear from wig and color professionals, but this fall was a challenge for us, that turned out surprisingly well. Sometimes you just don't know exactly what you'll get from hair of an unknown source, but we had done a test patch to see what would happen. Even with the test patch, we erred on the side of caution, so the first attempt at highlight...s really didn't come out great. We weren't sure what it would need, but we went ahead with our gut instinct, and thought it would need even more work afterwards, but then, voila! We were super pleased to see it all of a sudden looking exactly like we wanted it to look! We love it when my formula and Ahuva’s work come together to make someone's dreams come true! #WigOutWithGitel

The shoemaker’s kids, right? Not exactly! Because sometimes the wigmaker’s kid has some skills, did wash and sets for a while when she was living out of New York, and figured out ways to wash, wear, work with it and change it up every once in a while. Pictured here is Miriam, my daughter, in her custom kippah fall, worn several ways! Comment below which is your favorite! #WigOutWithGitel
