BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE. When I was looking for support groups after my cancer diagnosis, I wasn't able to find anything that quite clicked for me. I was new to Instagram and didn't understand how hashtags worked, so I missed out on great resources like @blackwomenrisinguk @feelonthefifth @pinkshoesinc ... @chrysalisinitiative @therapyforblackgirls @morganharpernichols @knowyourgirls So instead I reflected on what DID work for me: I found that sharing my story, with a little bit of humor, made cancer a more approachable topic and encouraged early detection. Women, mostly Black women, began to reach out to me and share their experience. This gave me a sense of purpose and deepen my appreciation for community. I was comforted hearing stories of resilience and what happened AFTER recovery. Humor. I openly shared the cancer was close to the nipple which the surgeons said they most likely couldn't save. This ended up being a running joke which I fully embraced and loved! My friends knew me and knew that laughter is the best medicine FOR ME. See photos 2, 3 & 4. My MINDSET. I knew my words and thoughts would be powerful tools, so I decided to only accept positive messaging. I kept myself away from people that were more interested in the trauma of the experience rather words for encouragement. I was lucky enough to be surrounded by a great group of people that were kind and thoughtful. It was key to my recovery. Next Step: Create a platform We wanted to create a space for ALL women, especially for women of color, to be able to see themselves and their stories. We post encouraging quotes once a week, usually on Mondays to stimulate a healthy mindset for the week and for a lifetime. We hope the bright colors and imagery make you smile. Based in the West Village, Gilda's Club was founded in the memory of Saturday Night Live comedian, Gilda Radner by her husband, friends, and donors to provided education, resources and services for cancer patients and their families. ‘While living in the West Coast, Gilda was a part of a psychological and social support community for people with cancer and their families. It was there that she found friendship, hope, and a renewed sense of control of her life. When I was going through cancer I tried to plan ahead for all the possible treatments I would endure. I needed my brain to accept the diagnosis before each step became a reality. During my preparation, the hardest item to find was good head wrap! As I started to give up my search, a friend of mine surprised me with a beautiful wrap from Israel (photo #2). Recently through our cancer sister @erinplum I was introduced to this PHENOMENAL company @sarahmusa They create beauti...ful hand-crafted turbans for everyone! We feature them today for many reasons! This is a Woman Owned Business. They are a socially and environmentally conscious brand that focuses on minimal waste. AND have collaborated with the American Cancer Society to design a fashionable turban for cancer patients. I recently purchased two head wraps but I'm going to highlight my favorite: the 10-in-1.
