Winter Solstice (Grianstad an Gheimhridh) is the longest night of the year and welcoming the return of the sun. In a celebration of this I've drawn the Caillea...ch who has an association with winter and wilderness. Beneath her is the neolithic passage at Newgrange which leads to the chamber that is illuminated by the Winter Solstice sun. Other ancient Irish sites that are aligned to the winter solstice are, Ballynoe Stone Circle in Down, Baltray Standing Sones in Louth, Drombeg Stone Circle in West Cork and the passage cairn which is known as the Cailleach's house on Slieve Gullion in Armagh is also illuminated by the Winter Solstice sun. Druids Cutting the Mistletoe on the Sixth Day of the Moon. Artist Henri-Paul Motte. From Peinture Française du 19ème Siècle: "During the Sixth Day of the Moon, ...the Yule time All-Heal ritual was performed. Dressed in ceremonial white robes, the Druid priest and priestess cut the mistletoe from the tree with a golden sickle. This mysterious evergreen plant is sacred to the Druids. Found embedded in ancient oaks, apples and poplars, suspended mid-way between heaven and earth, it symbolizes a gateway to another world. A spray was given to every family to hang in their homes to intensify spells and prayers, to protect the inhabitants and induce beautiful dreams. Beneath it, a kiss of peace was exchanged." See more
