Since aging is inevitable, let's join this octogenarian in being ambassadors for successful and graceful aging. While it's easy to join the chorus of those who lament, adopting a positive mindset and remaining socially engaged and as physically active as possible is essential to maximizing quality of life in later decades.

Programs introducing medical students to healthy seniors is a positive step toward combating ageism in the medical profession. Changing attitudes of students toward older adults should promote better interactions, communication and relationships, leading to enhanced care, treatment and hopefully outcomes. As evidence shows that the programs are effective, every medical school in the United States should implement a variation. Even if the programs do not result in a significant increase in the alarming shortage of geriatricians, they should certainly contribute to improving the quality of the physician-older patient relationship.

At Goidel Law Group, we strive to help our clients to safely and successfully remain in the residence of their choice (whether at home or in an independent or assisted living community) with appropriate care. For many individuals requiring assistance with the activities of daily living, care in the community is more attentive and less expensive. However, certain realities sometimes interfere requiring nursing home admission. That option is generally the last resort. Beware of DIY wills and other estate planning documents. While engaging in estate planning, it is never prudent to bypass the advice and counsel of experienced attorneys. All too often, I have reviewed wills, trusts and powers of attorney drafted by clients or inexperienced attorneys which are woefully inadequate and have created more time and expense to remedy. Saving a few thousand dollars on legal fees can result into costing the client and family members tens of thousa...nds of dollars when an improperly prepared estate plan fails to protect assets, especially in the context of delaying Medicaid eligibility. In the worst case scenario, by the time the issues are discovered, the client lacks capacity to execute proper replacement documents, necessitating a costly and intrusive guardianship proceeding. Cookie-cutter documents provided by online services cannot replace the valuable interaction and conversations between attorneys and clients. Sepsis is a serious and often fatal condition plaguing nursing home residents. Family members engaging in due diligence prior to admitting a loved one to a skilled nursing facility should access the valuable, interactive tool included in the attached article. Once admitted, family members must advocate for proper, diligent care and immediately intercede if there is any fear or evidence of neglect which can cause a fatal infection. Congratulations to the Sid Jacobson JCC which celebrated its 15th Friendship Circle Luncheon yesterday.
