Today officially marks the beginning of #BlackHistoryMonth. It is a time of celebration, heritage, culture, and accomplishments. We are proud to commemorate the important contributions of black Jamaicans being made today, as well as throughout history. All February, we will be telling the stories of black leaders who inspire us and who fought to confront history and overcome racial inequality. Join us in honoring the past, celebrating the present, and looking towards a brigh...ter future. We’d like to pause to honor the legacy of Samuel Sharpe, one of the 7 national heroes of Jamaica. Born a slave, Sharpe was a Baptist Deacon who fought for the abolition of slavery, and who was instrumental in organizing the Christmas Uprising of 1831. Though the revolt only lasted 8 days and resulted in Sharpe’s execution, it eventually led to the end of legal slavery in Jamaica. Sharpe was honored with the Order of the National Hero in 1982, and his image is currently used on the Jamaican $50 bill. #BlackHistoryMonth2021 #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackLivesMatter #BlackHeritage
