SHERIFF SEEKS HELP LOCATING MAN WHO TOSSED A NON-LETHAL CHEMICAL AGENT AT A DEPUTY Deputies Attempting to Locate the Driver of a White Pickup Truck Trailering a...n ATV and Tires Buffalo, NY Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard is seeking to identify a male subject who deployed a gas grenade during a vehicle pursuit. On January 24 at approximately 6:15 p.m., a Deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop along Route 438 on the Seneca Nation of Indians’ Cattaraugus Territories. The vehicle refused to pull over, and the operator tossed a non-lethal chemical grenade at the patrol vehicle. Powder residue from the gas grenade entered the vehicle’s cabin, causing a reaction. Due to Deputy’s discomfort and safety issues, they terminated the pursuit. The vehicle was last observed traveling westbound on Rte. 438, and Deputies believe the truck was heading west along the route before the attempted traffic stop. Sheriff’s Detectives are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the vehicle, operator, and persons associated with the incident. The vehicle is described as an older model white pickup truck, possibly a Dodge, towing a trailer. The trailer is a black tandem-axle utility trailer with round tubing railings carrying an older model ATV and several tires. The trailer did not have a ramp or gate, and the rear passenger tail light was missing. Also, the trailer’s plate appeared to be from a different state. Anyone with information about the truck, trailer, or operator is urged to call the Erie County Sheriff’s Office at 716.858.2903. The Sheriff’s Office is also asking area businesses and residents along the highway to review security footage and share any images showing a truck matching the description with Detectives. Seneca Nation EMS transported the Deputy to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment. The Deputy was later released from the hospital. # # #

I just want to say thank you, I worked last night and have NEVER had so many friendly waves, I have had tons of people say thank you and offer their support, it... truly means more than you know and it means it now more than ever, But what I say to them is this... I thank you for the support, it truly mean a lot, but not one of us swore on a bible and took an oath to protect our constitution so that we could win a popularity contest, not one of us took our badge and said People are really going to like me now not one of us said this will be an easy gig, in the words of my Dad, who told me this job is 99% boredom and 1% sheer mind bending terror...That ratio has definitely fluctuated over my career but it is an accurate description of our nations police officers, we are here for that moment when people are at their worst, we don’t do it for free coffees, we don’t do it to wield authority we don’t do it for popularity, we experience that mind bending terror so that our communities and our families don’t have to, I don’t want my kids or family or neighbors to EVER have to see the things that I’ve seen or experience the things that I’ve experienced, it’s why we do it, so you and they don’t have to...We signed up knowing what to expect and this is no different. We’ll get through it because our sense of community and duty is unflappable, we do it because everyone in our community IS our family...But...I agreed to take the badge, I’m the one that asked for it, I’m the one that at 21 years old knowingly took a job that I knew would be dangerous...My wife did not, yes, she knew she married a police officer, but she did not agree to take on my burdens, My children Did not agree to take on our burdens, and I worry for them every day, more than they will ever know, I’m nervous going to work, knowing that people know a cop lives there, I’m scared that my wife will be harassed on Facebook, I’m terrified that my kids will go back to school and hear your dads a racist from peers, I’m terrified that my family, who I got into this career to keep safe will suffer more than anyone... Police officers are conditioned to take abuse, I’ve been spit on, I’ve been punched , I’ve been called every name you can think of, and it’s nothing more than the cost of doing business it’s seeing people at their worst, I don’t hold Ill will towards anyone I’ve ever arrested, in fact I take great joy in people getting their lives together and hearing success stories, the abuse is just another day at the office for us...but this is different, I’ve never seen my wife defend me like she has recently, I’ve never heard her say the things she’s said and she shouldn’t have to, my job is to defend her, not the other way around...After 19 years, my mother has never called me in tears worried sick about me, this is unnatural and please know that this is truly making our families suffer, the broad statements on FB, the negative comments, are not effecting the officers, they are effecting their children and wives, and parents...this is how I feel, and I just had to say it, support is always welcome, but the negativity is not, valid points are welcome, but offensive words are not, some of you are looking for change and that’s great, but this is not the way to do it, be sensitive to the fact that my wife did not sign up for this, be sensitive that my children didn’t sign up for this, don’t comment on a police wife’s post your Opinions do it elsewhere, your not effecting the evil cop your effecting his innocent family and that goes against every ounce of the point your attempting to make...and for those that have been so kind and supportive of me out there at work, please be supportive our families as well, all they see in the media is horrible things being said about their Dads and Husbands and Wives and Mothers, my 15 year old has never taken so much interest in me leaving for work, I know it’s eating him alive, I put on my No Big face and act as it’s the norm, but inside we are sick with worry, not for us, for them.. They are the ones suffering more than ANYONE throughout this... i remember my dad putting on a uniform and leaving for work, and I remember crying at night worried about him, I know first hand what it’s like to have a dad as a police officer, it’s stressful in its self, please don’t compound that, please combat it, I know this was long but I had to decompress a vein that’s been swelling in my forehead, if you read this thanks for listening and thank you for the support, it truly means more than you know, and just a friendly wave has the ability to change an entire shift and reminds us what we’re doing this for...
