*SCAM ALERT* A grandparent scam is targeting older adults with calls from fraudsters posing as grandchildren asking for money. In 2020, the Federal Trade Commi...ssion received 24,545 complaints of individuals impersonating family members and friends which is up 21% from 2019. NYers alone filed 1,359 complaints in 2020. The New York State Attorney General offers NYers some helpful tips to protect themselves and stop this type of fraud. - Scammers create a sense of urgency to prey on victims’ emotions - Verify an emergency with friends or family before sending $ - If the caller purports to be a bail bondsperson, ask where the relative is being held and contact the facility directly - Be suspicious of anyone who calls asking to be sent $ - Never send cash through the mail - Never purchase pre-paid debit cards or gift cards to transfer $ - Develop a secret code with family to verify their identity on the phone - Ask a question that only your grandchild would know the answer to - Set social media to private to limit information available to scammers. https://on.ny.gov/38jQja3
