DID YOU KNOW......? By the GB Sports HOF & Museum! BINGHAMTON'S OWN BILL HALLAHAN: THE FIRST NL ALL-STAR STARTING PITCHER! The first all-star game between the National League and American League was played in the summer of 1933, at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The starting pitcher for the National League was Binghamton's own Bill Hallahan, who was born in Binghamton on August 4, 1902, and was a lifetime denizen of Binghamton. In 1933 Bill was the ace of the St. Louis Cardinals,... and Dizzy Dean was playing second fiddle to him! Hallahan was affectionately known as "Wild Bill" and was arguably the best pitcher in baseball from 1930-1933. He won three World Championships with the Cards (1926, 1931, and 1934), and in the 1931 World Series against the Philadelphia Athletics, he won 2 games, saved another, and posted an incredible 0.49 E.R.A. in 19.1 innings pitched! Year Won Lost E.R.A. Innings Pitched Strikeouts BB 1930 15 9 4.66 237.1 177 126 1931 19 9 3.29 248.2 159 112 1932 12 7 3.11 176.1 108 69 1933 16 13 3.50 244,1 93 98 Bill's Best 4-Year Stretch; bold indicates he led the league. Statistics courtesy of Baseballresearch.com After his playing days were over, Bill returned to his hometown and lived on Davis Street, just a few blocks from Recreation Park. He would often watch the little leaguers play at the park. Today, there is a plaque mounted on a small monolith that proclaims the field as "Hallahan Field." Bill (#11) is on the left in the first row of the picture of the 1933 National League All-Star team. See more
