It seems the dry, hot weather is behind us for now. Although we had above average rain in the Spring, the recent weather showed us all that it doesn't take long for heat and drought stress to set in this time of year. As I have mentioned in the past, the sun is out 15-16 hours a day, draining your lawn of 1/4 inch of moisture a day. For many of us to keeping up with irrigation can be difficult and we allow our lawn to go dormant. One question we have been getting late...ly from numerous commercial mowers and homeowners alike is "Why am I getting tire/foot marks in my lawn and how can I prevent it?" During the time between a healthy lawn and dormancy, the lawn looks green but are on the verge of wilting. At this point it is easy to damage the lawn with tire marks or even walking in the lawn. This is what we call Heat Tracking. One way of preventing this is to have an irrigation schedule, shoot for 40-60 minutes a week, preferably early in the morning. If the damage is already done, water the lawn for 30-40 minutes immediately. Start an irrigation schedule of every other day for 20 minutes and you should have the lawn back to normal in a week or two. If your lawn care professional just mowed or applied an application on your lawn and you are worried that you may be a good candidate for Heat Tracking, please water immediately to help with any stress. As always feel free to call us with any questions 315-458-1100. See more

It's that time of year again. The snow melts and we get our first look at what this year’s winter has done to our lawn. Several factors that we CAN control to make sure our lawns look their best coming out of winter. Get all the leaves, mulch, and debris off of the lawn before the first snow falls. Mow the lawn until it stops growing in the fall. Preferably to 1 inches. Make sure you use a slow release low nitrogen fertilizer going into winter.... Even as we take these precautions, we hope Mother Nature cooperates as well. There are many things we won't be able to control. That early snow that comes before the leaves are up. If the ground isn’t frozen before the snow falls, it leaves a moister barrier that becomes a breeding ground for snow mold. The temperatures reaching growing degree days during the winter. Having susceptible species of grass’ such as Bent or Course Fescue grasses. Unfortunately, this winter we received more than our fair share of unfavorable conditions. Pink and Gray Snow Mold seems to be extremely prevalent this year. I am hoping this early spring will continue and help with recovery. It’s rare that snow mold damage is so bad that the lawn can’t recover. To speed up recovery, GENTLY rake infected areas to allow air to the roots and break up the matted patches. Please call us with any questions or concerns. We would love to help. 315-458-1100

MOLES AND VOLES Spring is right around the corner. (Please don't look out the window, just trust me) Starting next week temperatures will be getting warmer and many of us will see mounds of dirt in our yard. Usually that is a sign that Moles and Voles have decided to pass though your yard. For 90% of us that is all that is, just them passing through to get a meal. The mess they leave behind may look bad but should be relatively easy to repair. Rake the pile of dirt back down so the sun can reach the plant and if needed plant grass seed. In a few weeks you won't even notice there was damage in the first place. If you have a much larger issue please contact us so we can go over your option. Most lawns recover very fast in the spring, even with severe cases. 315-458-1100

Just when we were recovering well from a brutal summer, Mother Nature throws us another curveball. With the overnight temperatures being extremely high and the oppressive humidity, our lawns become susceptible to disease. To help prevent a lawn disease WATER IN THE MORNING ONLY. Please DO NOT water in the afternoon or at night, especially if you have bent grass. Fortunately we should have more favorable conditions by the end of the week. Please call us with any questions 315-458-1100.

Anyone who has ever read our newsletters, know that we always are asking our customers to mow high, at least 3 inches. There are several reasons for this.

Last week we started our insect and grub control service. Look like it was just in the nick of time with the beetles being so active the last few weeks. Just a reminder that this service needs to be watered in to work. It activates the product as well as bring the insects and grub to the surface to be eliminated. Please call with any questions, 315-458-1100.
