Plums are in bloom at our West Wind Farm! Did you know we grow red plums, yellow plums, purple plums, and prune plums? Yellow plums ripen earliest in the season around late July. The variety we grow are called Shiro and they are a Japanese plum. When fully ripe a Shiro plum has bright yellow skin and matching bright yellow flesh.... Our red plums ripen next around the start of August and they are usually the smallest plum. But don't let their size fool you. What they lack in size they make up for in flavor! Purple plums typically ripen in mid to late August and come in a variety of shapes and sizes ranging from circular to oblong. We grow both Japanese and European style purple plums. Our most popular plums by far are prune plums! These delicious fruits don't ripen until late August into early September and they are known for their purple skin, green flesh, and incredibly sweet flavor.
