Meet Our Flower Crush Of The Week! It may come as a surprise that despite the name, The Bells of Ireland actually hail from Syria and Turkey and are part of the mint family - hence their aroma (which while not completely minty certainly has some mint top notes!). Regardless of origins, the Bells of Ireland are sure to bring the luck of the Irish to all who receive them as they symbolize profound, good luck. #GreenCottageHighFalls #HighFalls #Flowers #TheGreenCottage #UpstateNY #HudsonValley #HudsonValleyFlorist #ShopLocal

A little bit of luck and a lot of love: my father, the Grand Marshal! A few years ago my dad was chosen to be the Grand Marshal of Staten Island’s Saint Patrick’s Day parade. He invited both of his sons to march alongside him. I, being crippled by shyness, declined. My brother, Sean, jumped at the invitation. No surprises there! On the big day, my mother, her friend Bev, Dave and I took our places at the reviewing stand and waited for the parade to begin. Two bomb scares and... several hours later, the festivities officially began. We faintly heard the pipers in the distance and, as the music grew louder, we could see the flashing lights on the police cruisers that cleared the way for the marchers. My Dad came into view and then passed by us looking so handsome and proud in his cut-away morning suit, complete with a top hat and a bright green and orange sash draped from his shoulder to his waist. Over my shoulder, I heard my mom say to Bev, Would you look at that ass! My eyes strayed to my dad’s left. There he was: pink metallic combat boots and a purple patterned kilt - my brother Sean! My mom sighed and gave a small smile, Guess he’ll never change. My heart swelled with pride. Those were my guys! My brother with all the guts in the world and my dad, who was so proud to have him by his side that he probably did not even notice the boots. I immediately regretted my decision not to be up there with them both. We were raised to be proud of our Irish heritage and, I have to admit, some of that remains. However, what I’m most proud of is the fact that I come from a long line of loving and loved people. Think about it. The Grand Marshal of the Saint Patrick's Day parade grinning proudly as he marched alongside his kilt-clad, pink metallic combat boot-wearing son. Now that says something. #Lucky #StPatricksDay #GoodLuck #GreenCottageHighFalls #TheGreenCottage #HudsonValley #NewYork #Upstate #Flowers

On the Perils of Finding the Perfect Tree... Thanksgiving has come and gone. Normally, we would have had our open house on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. We all dressed up out of habitno champagne, no hors d’oeuvres, just hand sanitizer, and masks. Dennis’ big fear was that someone would show up expecting a party and he’d have nothing to give them. Luckily, our customers are smarter than that; crisis averted. The Monday after Thanksgiving is my day to sleep in and Den...nis’ day to get the tree. For some reason, tree day always ends up being one of the rainiest days of the year. Don’t forget your boots, I shouted down from the warm dry nest I had made for myself and the two dogs. When I stumbled downstairs for a second cup of coffee, I noticed the boots still standing in the corner, still five years old and still brand new. This year, like all others, Dennis refused to think ahead; he went right to the task without a spare moment to think about dry feet. He drives me crazy! I’ve only gone on the tree-getting pilgrimage once and refuse to do it again. I thought it might be a lovely Rockwell-esque moment, a scene from Currier and Ives, complete with hot chocolate and carolers. What did I get? Fighting couples, screaming children, lukewarm powdered cider in a leaky paper cup and blaring country music played on a boombox. As we headed into the forest of doomed trees, pulling a sheet of plastic behind us, Dennis immediately began to act erratically. He ran from tree to tree circling each one twice and then stepping back and squinting his eyes. What the hell are you doing?, I asked. That’s how you see the true shape of the tree, he explained mystically. Stepping back and squinting is a tool he uses often during the holidays. As his pace increased, I asked, Is someone chasing you? and received no answer, just a trail of mud splatter where he once stood. Up the hill, down the hill and then back up the hill once again, miles and miles covered in pursuit of something I had lost interest in hours ago. Never again! When I was a kid we went to a lot to buy our tree. Hard asphalt under our feet and a warm fire in an oil drum to keep us warm. Easy shopping. Pick a tree, give it a good shake and if the ground is not covered with needles you were good to go. Home we went to lie to dad about the price paid. Whether you cut down your own tree or took a page from my sensible family book and bought yours in the comfort of a parking lot, the shop is filled to the brim with sparkling ornaments as well as everything needed to get cozy when you've returned home and wrestled the tree in the door. Once your tree is trimmed, I’ll leave it up to you whether or not you step back and squint. We Have a Winner! Congratulations *** Kathleen Ortiz *** winner of a Green Cottage bouquet!
