Attention paddlers! The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, along with the NYS Canal Corporation, has launched the NYS Canalway Water Trail Stewardship Program to help ensure the Erie, Cayuga-Seneca, Champlain, and Oswego canals are welcoming and safe for paddlers. The New York State Canal Corporation reminds mariners that the Canal system is scheduled to close to navigation at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. All recreational and commercial vessel operators should plan their trips to ensure they exit the system by that time. The October 14th closure allows Canal Corporation employees and its contractors the ability to begin working on a backlog of maintenance projects that were deferred earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pand...emic while the weather is favorable, and will ensure projects will be completed ahead of the 2021 season, which is currently scheduled to begin in May barring any unforeseen circumstances. The Canal Corporation urges all users to register to receive updates through the Notice to Mariners notification program at www.canals.ny.gov. Mariners are advised that a bridge inspection will be occurring on the Champlain Canal according to the following schedule: -Tuesday, 9/29/20 Route 4, Boardman St. Bridge (C-29) in Whitehall. This inspection will be conducted by an Under-Bridge Inspection Unit (Snooper vehicle) from the top of the bridge. A safety boat moving below the bridge. Inspectors may be contacted on Marine Channel 13 for clearance to pass.... Boaters should reduce speed, stop all forward motion and proceed at a "No Wake" speed after receiving clearance to pass. The Canal system is scheduled to close to navigation at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, October 14, 2020.
