It can be amazing that the same piece of wood can show two very different faces! George turned this antique pepper mill of cherry with a black walnut top ring, and the contrasting views were surprising, don't you agree?
As we approach Christmas and the New Year, we want to say "Thank You!" to everyone who reached out to us in the past! We have enjoyed the challenges and the feedback you have given us, and we aim to continue it into 2021! We anticipate some changes (USPS lost some of our orders...we will ship by other carriers until it is rectified. Our customers deserve better service) and we are considering new items in our line. We wish every one the best of 2021 to all of you and the people you hold dear! George & Theresa
Finishing! It signals the end of the project, and can be the most frustrating part. The finish should fit the end use. Does it need to be durable? Food safe? An artistic addition? Historically correct? The atmosphere in the studio needs to be rightnot too hot or cold, not dusty, not too dry or humid? And how should it be applied? After all the decisions, a run or drip can mean sanding down and starting over. We at GTO Woodturning strive to make each woodturning as perfect as we can, down to the finish! George has been busy with some special projects and finishing orders.
We appreciate all the folks who have supported us...and recognized that small businesses strive to give excellent products & service. The profits may be small for us, but they keep us going! Thank You! And if you have not ordered from us yet, give us a chance to provide you with one-of-a-kind mill or other product...guaranteed! This mill is on it's way out of state to a new customer. Wormy Butternut & turquoise!
Happy Thanksgiving to all! And may each of you enjoy the entire season. Please remember that we, and every independent artist is thankful for you and your support of our art and craft. In your shopping quests, please check out the guild shops for very special gifts. Not likely to be crowded, and a treat for the senses! We appreciate our shops, and all who keep them going, including The Artisans Guild (Oneonta), Cooper Country Crafts (Cooperstown), The Farmers' Museum (Cooperstown), Folklore (Schenectady), Schoharie Fresh (Cobleskill) & The Vine & The Branches (Bennington, VT.)! The turkeys below are from CCC! Enjoy!
Spaulting is a natural occurrence as some woods begin to decay, leaving the "Black Lightening" effect when it happens on lighter woods. The finishing process preserves the wood from further decay, and preserves the design. It is wonderful to work with wood that reveals a distinctive "personality" with each piece. This "Antique" Pepper Mill is turned of spaulted maple with an offset of black walnut. Isn't the grain pattern of the maple amazing? The reverse is as pretty as the front on this piece! It should be on our web site later today!
Sometimes George finds a piece of wood that he just has to turn into something special. He had some maple and some black walnut...and put them together then turned an "Antique" Pepper Mill with a genuine turquoise accent! It is a beauty for sure, and it could be yours if you act quickly! It is listed on our web site (www.gtowoodturning.com) or you can email us at [email protected] for particulars!
