#WorkoftheWeek: In Coloring Book 9, artist Sable Elyse Smith turns to the less-examined record that is the child’s coloring book, specifically one that takes as its subject details concerning the judicial system. Through her enlargement of select pages from the bookfeaturing judges, juries, and other carceral motifsSmith surfaces the ways in which these seemingly innocent materials serve to teach children the logics of incarceration from a young age. By scribbling acros...s the pages, Smith effectively speaks back to oppressive systems. Experience Smith’s work in our current exhibition Off the Record. Who is more vulnerable: the human who built the machine or the machine who is controlled by a human? This is the moral question raised in Can’t Help Myself (2016), a site-specific installation created for the Guggenheim by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu. The artists were invited to create an artwork in response to ideas of territory, boundary, and borders. The result was a modified industrial robot, designed to continuously sweep an oozing dark-red liquid so it remains within a cer...tain circumference. When sensors detect that the liquid has seeped beyond the boundary, the robotic arm carefully pulls the liquid back into place. Once the machine has completed this repetitive task, it starts to dance, randomly combining a sequence from thirty-two programmed movements that mimic human and animal actions like scratch an itch or bow and shake. The installation examines our increasingly automated global reality, one in which territories are controlled mechanically and the relationship between people and technology is rapidly changing. __ Can’t Help Myself (2016), Sun Yuan and Peng Yu

This #NationalPieDay, feast your eyes on Sharon Core’s Candy Counter 1969 (2004). This work is part of the artist’s Thiebauds series, and each image is a to-scale simulation of one of the iconic 1960s food paintings of Bay Area artist Wayne Thiebaudpaintings that themselves confound reality and representation by replicating cake frosting with the thick impasto of oil paint. Working from catalogue reproductions of the original canvases, Core painstakingly bakes and prep...ares the cakes, pies, candy, hot dogs, and other assorted treats, giving tangible form to what Thiebaud is said to have painted from memory. Core’s images are not only as visually lush as Thiebaud’s canvases, but they also raise a series of questions about the boundary between reality and artifice. __ Candy Counter 1969 (2004), Sharon Core. This past summer and fall amidst widespread cancellations, Works & Process forged a path for artists to safely gather, create, and perform together again. After an unprecedented period of isolation, Works & Process invited over fifty artists to enter residences in rural Hudson Valley (under a medical protocol developed with a team of doctors). To capture this journey, Works & Process produced Isolation to Creation, a four-part docuseries by filmmaker Nic Petry of Dancing ...Camera, to provide audiences with the rare opportunity to enter the bubbles and witness the hope, joy, exhilarating physical struggle, and emotional challenges experienced by performers returning to the studio and stage. Happy Halloween from the BOO-ggenheim! The six figures in George Segal’s The Costume Party (pictured) appear in an array of primary colors. The subject matter springs from personal experienceSegal had attended a Halloween party and decided that the theme had possibilities. A #MuseumMomentofZenand a reminder to breathe today. Since the early 1990s, Shirazeh Houshiary has been making paintings and drawings that evoke universal human experiences. Working on the floor over the canvas, Houshiary begins these works by drawing Arabic words that she repeats in delicate layers over an acrylic ground. The colored pencil markings are woven like a chant, their minute reverberation transitioning from legibility to invisibility to create an immersive immate...riality in works like Presence (pictured). The form of these works as well as the meaning of the words themselves are not of primary importance to Houshiary; rather, they are a starting point for an encounter with the sublime: I set out to capture my breath, to find the essence of my own existence, transcending name, nationality, cultures. __ Presence (200607), Shirazeh Houshiary
