The Adirondacks as a National Park? In the late-60s the idea had legs but never got to stand.

Did you know? The Adirondack Mountains are very different in shape and content from other mountain systems. Unlike elongated ranges like the Rockies and the App...alachians, the Adirondacks form a circular dome, 160 miles wide and 1 mile high. Although the Dome as we know it today is a relatively recent development, having emerged about 5 million years ago, it is made of ancient rocks more than a 1,000 million years old. Hence, the Adirondacks are "new mountains from old rocks." Souce: Adirondack Park Agency

If you’ve never climbed a fire Tower, check out Hadley Mountain Fire Tower this Spring or Summer. After the long-duration fires of 1903 and 1908, New York established fire districts complete with superintendents and patrolmen whose job it was to detect fires early and extinguish them efficiently. Fire towers were constructed on mountaintops and outfitted with 360 maps that would allow observers to pinpoint the location of fires in the distance.
