Spotted Rabbit therapists spent a good deal of our covid break developing new ways we could live up to our belief that quality therapy services should be acce...ssible to all. One way we’re making this happen is through a series of pay-what-you-can art therapy groups. . First to launch is ART CONNECT - a monthly art therapy group for LGBTQIA+ adults age eighteen and older who want to tap into their creativity, strengthen their sense of self, develop emotionally healthy practices, and build stronger relationships in an inclusive and supportive environment. . Art Connect is an ongoing group and meets every third Wednesday from 6-7:30pm at Spotted Rabbit Studio. Each session will feature a unique art-based project focusing on LGBTQIA+ identity and the individual stories entwined within. Registration is required and spaces are limited. Art Connect is being offered as a pay what you can service (suggested payment of $15) and no one will be turned away for inability to pay. Art Connect is facilitated by Alexis Plastow, LCAT-LP, an LGBTQIA identifying therapist. . Spotted Rabbit Studio is an ADA accessible, trauma-informed art therapy practice located in Brighton, NY. Please contact us by phone or text at (585) 430-9877 or email at [email protected] with questions or to sign up! . Quilt Artist Renee Allen says she uses her artworks to amplify the voices of the soft spoken. The tactile quality of the fabric enables her to create and exhibit the emotions of her subject matter. She created this quilt to express her emotions about Juneteenth, a holiday celebrating the liberation of those who had been held as slaves in the United States. The historic event happened on June 19th, 1865 in Texas. Journaling can be especially helpful during times of strife and here is one of the activities I am encouraging clients to create in their journals. There are so many benefits to journaling that can help. You can do a strictly writing journal or incorporate some art (sketching or collage, etc) into one as well. The control/can't control graphic below is just a few of the ideas you can place into the areas. Try to think of even small things that you have gratitude for (ie. ho...t coffee, getting groceries/prescriptions delivered to home, FaceTime and Skype to connect to family and friends, being able to walk the dog, etc.) There is no right or wrong way to do a journal. Simply write about what comes into your head, any thoughts that arise. It is a powerful tool to understand and possibly manage your thoughts. It's also a tool to look back at when times of challenge come to you in life and a way to see how strong you actually are when faced with adversity. It can help release the thoughts from your brain onto paper so you can get some rest, and decrease the intensity of your experiences right now. Be safe and well,
