Buried beneath the wreckage of the #TwinTowers was a 36-foot-tall piece of steel from the South Tower. Uncovered by rescue and recovery workers, the Last Column was soon filled with inscriptions and mementos left by workers, relatives and friends of victims. Crowned by an American flag, the Last Column became a symbol of strength and resilience for the site’s recovery workers and the nation who witnessed their efforts.
