Hampton Bays Elementary School students have been making connections with world-class musicians from the wind quintet Connect Five, made up of alumni of Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect program. With traditional in-school assemblies put on hold this year, the students were able to establish connections with the musicians via Zoom. The musicians demonstrated their instruments, spoke to the students about their careers in music and answered questions. There are many wonder...ful video resources available on the internet, but we felt Zoom meetings would help introduce students to the people behind the music, said music teacher Steve Pilliero. The quintet also created two video presentations for the students. The first retold Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. Although it was composed 85 years ago, the story still excited the children’s imaginations. The musicians were playful as they narrated the story in costume, which added even more engagement to the presentation. The second was an original program, Storytelling Through Music, in which the musicians demonstrated how instrumental music can express many moods, emotions and actions. The musicians played excerpts from various pieces and asked the students to listen carefully to how various instruments expressed different emotions. Students also dressed up for a music-themed day. The program was graciously offered to the school free of charge by Quogue Chamber Music and through a generous grant from the Huntington Arts Council.

Last week, I asked the school community to choose a word or phrase that captured the essence of 2020. With a few hundred responses, you can see the graphic below; the more times a word showed up, the larger it is represented. With just a few hours to go before leaving 2020 behind, I’m heartened to see that resilience, grateful, perspective and perseverance are four of the most represented sentiments. If that doesn’t scream #HBStrong, I don’t know what does. From all of us in the HB Schools, a happy and healthy 2021 to all! #WeAreHB /LC

Students in first through fourth grade at Hampton Bays Elementary School have been learning to code using the interactive software CodeSpark. The program guides students through coding steps and teaches sequencing, looping and algorithms. After students complete a series of tutorial lessons, they are able to create their own coded game that can be shared and played with their peers. Students love having the ability to try designing their own video games, said teacher Dr. Jonathan Dellasperanza. CodeSpark is a wonderful learning platform that provides students with an engaging and interactive way to experience the coding/gaming process.

The second wave of COVID-19 has arrived in Suffolk County. Please remember to monitor your children's symptoms and, if there are ANY, stay home from school. Stopping the community spread of COVID is our number one job right now. Our ability to stay open to in-person instruction relies upon sick kids and adults staying home. Thank you for working with us to do that! It's the #HBStrong way. https://www.cdc.gov//2019-n/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html

Erin McDermott’s second grade students at Hampton Bays Elementary School learned all about bones during a recent cross-curricular unit that combined English language arts, math and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) concepts. The students researched bones through a variety of materials, including nonfiction books, articles and videos. Using their new knowledge, they wrote informative texts about bones. The lesson culminated with an interactive read aloud... of Bonaparte Falls Apart by Margery Cuyler and a STEAM challenge in which the class used Q-tips and Play Doh to build the character Bonaparte from the reading. Students enjoyed exhibiting their creativity and STEAM skills to build a structure that would allow Bonaparte to keep all his bones, said McDermott.

Using vegetable oil, feathers and water, Hampton Bays Elementary School third grade teacher Karen Lombardo showed her students the effect an oil spill has on the environment. The experiment was part of a Fountas and Pinnell interactive read-aloud lesson on the environment and preventing disasters. The students read Oil Spill by Melvin Berger and then participated in the oil spill experiment. Students observed our healthy water and then examined our oil spill water, said... Lombardo. Using a feather, they saw the effects oil can have on wildlife and plants. The class also discussed the many ways oil spills can be cleaned up and how they can be prevented. I was very impressed with their critical thinking, said Lombardo. Students came up with ideas to prevent spills, including redesigning ships and improving communication.

Hampton Bays Elementary School kindergartners in June Eaton’s class recently learned all about pumpkins through a multifaceted lesson. The students engaged in the seasonally appropriate lesson by reading a Scholastic article about pumpkins and the book It’s Pumpkin Time by Zoe Hall, watching videos and playing interactive games on their classroom smartboard. They also got creative with an art project that had them stuff paper bags, round them into a pumpkin shape and finish the look with orange paint. The lesson will culminate with students counting the seeds inside a pumpkin and writing reports about the gourd.

What is a pendulum? That is a question Hampton Bays Middle School students explored as part of a multifaceted STEM lesson regarding the science behind pendulums. The students in Scott Garofola’s class first investigated and discussed the forces that create the movement of a pendulum, including inertia, gravity and oscillation periods, before putting their knowledge to the test. With wood, nails, screws and hammers, the students where challenged to design and construct a w...ooden pendulum apparatus that they could use to create paintings. To make the paintings, they used a cup full of paint with a hole in it and applied lateral force to their pendulums, then let gravity do the rest. They also had to determine the appropriate size hole in their paint cups and the proper viscosity of the paint using water. The result was some cool designs in circles and ellipticals, said Garofola.

While musical ensembles have been put on hold at Hampton Bays Middle School due to COVID-19 restrictions, students are still making music and doing it through ukulele lessons. Last year, music teacher Carolanne Mazur kicked off the ukulele program, which has now grown to include 50 seventh and eighth graders. We are having so much fun, and it’s great to play music again with our amazing students, said Mazur. ... Participating students follow a rotating lesson schedule in order to maintain social distancing guidelines. Just two weeks into the program, many have already learned and reviewed four chords. Mazur hopes to expand the program to sixth graders later in the school year.

As part of an interdisciplinary lesson on erosion and the earth’s surface, Hampton Bays Elementary School students investigated how the water in rivers and streams moves. In the school’s STEM lab, students created a paper model of the earth’s surface and a mountain, delineating peaks with markers. They sprayed the mountain with water to simulate rain, which allowed them to observe how the water moved down the paper mountain and created rivers.
