Henry Ossian Flipper was born a slave but in 1877 he became the first African-American cadet to graduate West Point - The U.S. Military Academy. Earning a commi...ssion as a second lieutenant, he then became the first African-American to be commissioned as an officer in the Army -- or any other branch of the U.S. military -- as well as the first African-American officer to command #Soldiers when he assumed command of Troop A, 10th Cavalry Regiment, also known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Today, the Henry O. Flipper Memorial award is given to the West Point cadet who best demonstrates leadership, self-discipline, and perseverance.
