Aparigraha, or non-possessiveness is one of the 5 Yamas in Yoga. Aparigraha's effects can be particularly profound, and there are countless opportunities to practice.Whether you are coveting someone else's job, outfit, or headstand practice - there will always be someone with more and better possessions, opportunities, and abilities. To remain unattached doesn't mean that we must denounce our belongings, relationships, or skills, but we do need to alter our attachments ...TO those things. Appreciating your career success (or headstand practice) without feeling that your self-worth is tied to it, or admiring and being inspired by someone else's, without falling into a rabbit-hole of "I deserve it more" jealousy. Practicing Aparigraha is more than not clinging to what we have, or coveting others. It iscelebrating what is ours while remembering that change is inevitable, and looking at opportunities as expansive rather than as a zero-sum game. Finding contentment and delight in what we have, and who we are, right now! See more

As we close out 2020,thisholiday season of lightis here to remind us thatdespite all of thesorrow, anxiety, and difficulty of the past months, there is still the opportunity for Joy. As the author Joseph Campbell putso eloquently, "Wecannot cure all the sorrows of the world, but we can choose to live in Joy" This is not to say that other emotions are not valid and appropriate for these times, nor to force ourselves or others to deny our lived experiences,espe...ciallyfor so many who are facing so much hardship. But for those of us who have the greatprivilege to be safe, healthy, and secure - it is a potent reminder of one of Yoga's fundamentalprincipals -Abhyasa. Defined as a steady, sustainedeffort, abhyasa implies action without interruptionthat isnot easily distracted, discouraged, or bored. In our asana practice, the more we practice, the more comfortable we feel and the more we WANT to practice. Finding Joy, particularly in a year as challenging as this one, requires somesimilareffort. So as weclose out this doozy of a year - we invite you to take some time to practice Joy, whatever that means to you. Dance in your living room, sing at the top of your lungs, cackle-laugh with friends and family over wine and zoom, read funny tweets online, or take a sweaty yoga class - But know that Joy is there for you and you DESERVE it! We are nearing the end of November where it has becomean #HYS tradition tofocus onGratitude. We can gloss over the meaning of gratitude as simply "giving thanks", but gratitude is derived from the Latin word "gratia" which means gratefulness - but alsograce or graciousness. There is true grace inGratitude. Research has shown that truegratitudeis more than simply appreciating someone's helpit is an orientation or viewpoint in which one notices and appreciates the positive things in their lives. This is where adaily and explicitpractice ofgratitudecan lead to true grace. As a resultgratitudehelps us to connect to something larger than ourselves - toour community, to nature, to a higher power.

Our theme forNovemberisoftenGratitude, but in 2020 it feels particularly relevant, andnecessary. While this year continues to be challenging, November has already given us a HUGEreason to be grateful nation-wide. We wanted to focus on why itis important to celebrate and appreciate thesepositive moments, even with all the work still to be done. Practicing gratitude has been clinically proven to improve mental and physical well-being, boost self-esteem, and even help you sleep better! Consistency of practice is one of the most important aspects of impact.Practicing gratitude can be a daily yoga asana practice, meditation, or journaling focused on gratitude. So asthis yearbeginsto come to aclose, we want to support you in seeing, appreciating, and savoring the good.
