Mather House at Grant Station built about 1861 by Francis Mather operated first by Francis Mather, then next by his son Oliver Mather a few years. Then by another son George A. Mather and his wife, Rhoda Mather until about 1905 when it was taken over by Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Rider. It was closed about 1912 and disassembled about 1919 by H. R Carlson and the present brick house erected on the site. This picture taken from a post card postmarked August 28, 1909. From George C. Fowler archives. No date when he wrote this.
On July 1, 1904 the name of Grant Station/Broken Straw was changed. The Post Office Dept. and Railroad asked the citizens to select a new name to avoid confusion. Mrs. Levi Way suggested Niobe, from a Greek mythology she was reading. On July 1, 1904 the name of Grant Station/Brokenstraw was changed. This is the Baptist Church in Niobe, 1908. Sorry, no names.
I have been gathering info on Niobe. These prints have opened up a lot of interest in the small area. If you have anything important to add please contact us. For those of you interested in the structures visit the Chautauqua County Historic Structure web site. A link is on the county historian's website. This is Cornell's saw mill, 1907.
Here is another image from the glass plate negatives, the Levi Way residence in Niobe.1907
And here is George Mather with his team in 1907. Also his home in Niobe, 1907 from our glass plate negatives.
We recently came across some glass plate negatives from Niobe, NY. Many thanks to Mark L. Anderson Photography for digitizing these negatives for us. This is labeled as Dwight Allen and oxen, Niobe, 1907
