SPRING has SPRUNG + with it, new thresholds to pass through. As we know, with the shift in the seasons, especially into spring after this long year, comes new life and re-birth. What better time to have been presented with a growth opportunity!?... It is in that light I offer this news. Hastings Yoga’s brick and mortar space, our beloved studio at 45 Main Street for the last 8 years, has been sold. That means we are moving. Although I have a lot of sadness and will be processing this grief along side all of you, I hold a tremendous amount of hope + possibility for what is to come. If you stop for a pause and feel the incredible power of this moment, and this transitional energy, it is truly fantastic. I hope to surrender to it and harness what I need to in order to keep the community buoyant + thriving as we discover what is next to come. The last day of classes at 45 Main will be Sunday, April 25th. I am entertaining many ideas of how to move forward, whether it be a new space downtown or a short term rental until we find what is just right for us! We are not closing.... we are simply in the process of moving and my strongest intention is to support the hastings yoga community through all of this! If there was a good time for this to happen, it is now. We are about to begin our outdoor season again which will allow you all to gather outdoor in class, as well as continue online with us! There are already outdoor offerings at Draper Park and Lyndhurst Mansion that I can offer drop ins to as well! please see the website for dates and times to secure your spaces in those classes. Email me with any questions. This community is strong. We’ve proven that we don’t necessarily need the walls of a studio to hold us together. I believe that to be more true than ever now. S T R E S S + Y O G A The traditional practice of yoga is designed to mitigate + relieve mental suffering or what we might see as the symptoms of stress. In The YOGA SUTRAS, Patanjali lays it out clearly for us. First defining what might be stressful, telling us the symptoms to watch out for, + then offering tools to help us understand ourselves better + ultimately be less stressed. ... In sutra 1:30 he says there are 9 afflictions (illness, fatigue, doubt, carelessness, laziness, overindulgence, over confidence, inability to concentrate + instability) that prevent us from developing the clarity of mind that will allow us to live stress free. These afflictions keep us from living our best life, out of alignment with what’s most important to us, + stressed In sutra 1:31 Patanjali says we are out of alignment when we experience one of the following symptoms: Pain, negative thinking, anxiety or Irregular breathing. Those four symptoms he laid out 1,000’s of years ago look + feel a lot like what we call stress today. So 1,000’s of years ago Yogis were experiencing ‘stress’ and looking for ways to manage it + find happiness just like we are now! In Sutras 1:32-1:39 Patanjali offers practices we can do to manage the symptoms when they surface. He begins by saying the key is to find the practice that works for you and then continually do it. If you are caught up negative thinking he says cultivate feelings of friendliness, compassion, + goodwill toward others, regardless of whether they are happy, suffering or mean. If your breathing is irregular, he says lengthen the exhale. If you feel mental discomfort, he says ‘engage the senses’ or tend to yourself with small acts of self care. Smell something pleasurable, taste something delicious, listen to soothing sounds, take a walk in nature to feel the wind or sun or earth beneath your feet, or feel the warm tender embrace of a loved one. If you’re feeling depressed, he says spend some time reflecting on something greater than yourself. If you’re stuck, he says ask for help. Finally he reminds, just find a practice that works and stick with it! How do you manage stress? Join us! We’re here!

Winter of Listening David Whyte No one but me by the fire, my hands burning... red in the palms while the night wind carries everything away outside. All this petty worry while the great cloak of the sky grows dark and intense round every living thing. What is precious inside us does not care to be known by the mind in ways that diminish its presence. What we strive for in perfection is not what turns us into the lit angel we desire, what disturbs and then nourishes has everything we need. What we hate in ourselves is what we cannot know in ourselves but what is true to the pattern does not need to be explained. Inside everyone is a great shout of joy waiting to be born. Even with the summer so far off I feel it grown in me now and ready to arrive in the world. All those years listening to those who had nothing to say. All those years forgetting how everything has its own voice to make itself heard. All those years forgetting how easily you can belong to everything simply by listening. And the slow difficulty of remembering how everything is born from an opposite and miraculous otherness. Silence and winter has led me to that otherness. So let this winter of listening be enough for the new life I must call my own. Patanjali explains in the Yoga Sutras that once the balance between opposites is achieved, thereafter one is undisturbed by the dualities. Whether applied to our formal practice or to our life off the mat, this suggests that when you allow opposites to coexist, rather than let one or the other end of the spectrum dominate, the ultimate reward is the composure + equanimity that bring so many people to yoga in the first place. If fear is the shark, worry is the shark fin. Once you see worry popping up, you know there is an underlying body of fear. And if you don’t spend time getting more intimate with the fear(s) they have ...this way of circling around and paralyzing you into lifelessness. Yoga helps us slow down, as well as remember our strength + resiliency, and cultivate a more clear, serene mind. These are the necessary ingredients for getting more intimate with our fear. When we look honestly, we see that Most fear stems from the inability to accept that all things are always changing and we will ultimately not be here forever. Starlings in Winter Chunky and noisy, but with stars in their black feathers, they spring from the telephone wire and instantly they are acrobats in the freezing wind. And now, in the theater of air, they swing over buildings, dipping and rising; they float like one stippled star that opens, becomes for a moment fragmented, then closes again; and you watch and you try but you simply can’t imagine how they do it with no articulated instruction, no pause, only the silent confirmation that they are this notable thing, this wheel of many parts, that can rise and spin over and over again, full of gorgeous life. Ah, world, what lessons you prepare for us, even in the leafless winter, even in the ashy city. By cultivating peace within ourselves, we can make the most of the resources we have,... no matter how small or large, we can engage more intentionally with the present moment, and take care of ourselves by being intentional with our actions and interactions with the world and this can maximize our potential positive impact. Thich nhat hanh says Every moment only once. If this moment right now is peace filled, and the next and the next, that makes for a more peaceful hour, day, week, month, and year.... and it ripples outward. So much of modern living has worked to disconnect us, and has added layers of stratification. Mother Theresa teaches if we have no peace, we have forgotten that we belong to each other.... Yoga + meditation practice helps is to reconnect and recover our sense of belonging. These practices support our coming home to ourselves again. It’s a great time to contemplate + illuminate, communicate + then release, the things that might be holding you back from a greater sense of fulfillment + freedom in your relationships. The key ingredient is trust. Trust in the divine feminine energy that what we cannot quite see yet, is always unfolding to support our greatest good! The letting go might be terribly difficult as the fall into the unknown can feel groundle...ss....trust that the universe is always throwing up the safety net just when we need it! That story you have repeated over and over in your mind in many different fancy + complicated ways... you know the one...you’re destined for failure, you’re never going to have what you want, no one cares about the little man- The story that keeps you safe in your bubble of existence.....it’s time to let this limiting story go! First get clear... and excruciatingly honest with yourself (sit quietly + invite that harsh voice to be seen...how is this sabotaging your growth?). Then communicate what you DO want (journal, pray, meditate, move your body, envision).... Then let the limiting beliefs go. Each time you hear that story showing up, trust you don’t need that crutch anymore, and there is more than you can ever imagine waiting to unfold!! It might not be totally clear how it will unfold, trust anyway. You’ve got this! Yoga + meditation help in all aspects of this.
